lizeeb3 (7:59:30 PM): hey!
littleC3788 (7:59:35 PM): hey
lizeeb3 (7:59:48 PM): Two snow days in a row for U of I
lizeeb3 (7:59:58 PM): It's great
BZWingZero (8:00:00 PM): What is this snow you speak of?
Nyeerrmm (8:00:16 PM): i remember it once... like a whisper of a dream
BZWingZero (8:00:18 PM): All we ever get is rain, and a chance of hurricane
lizeeb3 (8:00:23 PM): haha there is a blizzard here in Champaign
BZWingZero (8:00:47 PM): AFAIK, there has been one flurry here my entire lifke
BZWingZero (8:00:50 PM): life*
lizeeb3 (8:01:04 PM): wow
BZWingZero (8:01:12 PM): <-- florida
Nyeerrmm (8:01:47 PM): i know people from houston who stayed up till 5 in the morning to watch a few flakes fall (but not stick) one night freshman year
rmmlg08 (8:02:09 PM): I think we're supposed to get some of that in the next 24 hours
lizeeb3 (8:02:27 PM): we probably have a foot of snow already
lizeeb3 (8:07:05 PM): alright I guess we can get started
lizeeb3 (8:08:09 PM): The first thing I have is just a reminder for everyone to check their tickets more often and close them after you respond
BZWingZero (8:08:44 PM): I check them about once a week and have yet to see anything that wasnt spam, or even other than the nigerian flavor
lizeeb3 (8:08:57 PM): I was looking through some of them and came across an overdue one that was basically a magazine offering to interview SEDS for an article
lizeeb3 (8:09:53 PM): We can't let opportunities like this pass us up
lizeeb3 (8:10:24 PM): Luckily, they are still willing to do the article with us
Nyeerrmm (8:10:29 PM): sorry, that was my fault
Nyeerrmm (8:10:57 PM): ryan said something to me about it that he could do it, and i forgot to actually answer it and say that would be good
Nyeerrmm (8:11:12 PM): since i didnt feel that i should have done it myself
lizeeb3 (8:11:22 PM): Ok, well as long as it is cleared up there is no problem.
BZWingZero (8:11:37 PM): Who would be best for the interview?
lizeeb3 (8:11:53 PM): That is what I thought we should talk about next
lizeeb3 (8:12:11 PM): Is anyone interested?
lizeeb3 (8:13:00 PM): Ryan, do you want to do it?
rmmlg08 (8:13:23 PM): I could do it, though not sure I'm the best one to
Nyeerrmm (8:14:13 PM): it seemed like it was more astronomy related, so thats something to keep in mind
rmmlg08 (8:14:26 PM): does anyone have a specific interest in doing it
lizeeb3 (8:14:31 PM): Do you have any recommendations?
SithLrdJohn (8:14:36 PM): In that case it should be Josh
Nyeerrmm (8:14:48 PM): he'd probably be willing to
rmmlg08 (8:14:57 PM): that is true
lizeeb3 (8:16:26 PM): Brian Young, can you forward the interview questions to Josh to see if he can do it?
Nyeerrmm (8:16:47 PM): sure, i'll do that right now
lizeeb3 (8:16:49 PM): Josh had an announcement tonight so I am suprised he isn't here yet
lizeeb3 (8:16:51 PM): ok great
lizeeb3 (8:18:11 PM): Does anyone else have an announcement for tonight or updates?
Nyeerrmm (8:19:23 PM): I have a small one
lizeeb3 (8:19:31 PM): ok go ahead
Nyeerrmm (8:19:52 PM): we're going to be linked by Buzz Aldrins 'ShareSpace.org' whenever it goes up
BZWingZero (8:20:04 PM): very cool
Nyeerrmm (8:20:09 PM): i just sent off the blurb and url to them after they talked to us about it earlier
rmmlg08 (8:20:15 PM): what is this
Nyeerrmm (8:20:55 PM): they sent megha an email earlier that got past on to me, and they were looking for links to educational groups
lizeeb3 (8:21:45 PM): so we would have a link on their site?
rmmlg08 (8:22:00 PM): what kinds of things will be on this site
peoplefrommars (8:22:00 PM): great
Nyeerrmm (8:22:15 PM): http://www.sharespace.org/
rmmlg08 (8:22:35 PM): ah, very nice
Nyeerrmm (8:22:42 PM): community site for space education
lizeeb3 (8:22:52 PM): oh ok
lizeeb3 (8:23:56 PM): Other updates?
rmmlg08 (8:24:11 PM): I have a question for you guys
rmmlg08 (8:24:21 PM): in general
rmmlg08 (8:24:42 PM): what kinds of things are decision makers for deciding to go to a conference
RolandBolser (8:25:00 PM): I don't understand that question
rmmlg08 (8:25:20 PM): or what would be most helpful for you in terms of help from SEDS-USA in being able to go to them
rmmlg08 (8:25:29 PM): [I'm having trouble wording this, sorry]
rmmlg08 (8:25:36 PM): basically, what I'm getting at is
rmmlg08 (8:25:49 PM): how can I better assemble a list of conferences
rmmlg08 (8:26:03 PM): to better help people choose to go to and attend conferences
Nyeerrmm (8:27:19 PM): it'd be good to have a description of what others who attended did in previous years, or something like that
lizeeb3 (8:27:33 PM): maybe include some key highlights and events
rmmlg08 (8:27:51 PM): what do you mean by what others did
Nyeerrmm (8:28:32 PM): like a quote from someone about how they had a good time and met interesting people at ____ last year
Nyeerrmm (8:28:41 PM): at least for ones like ISDC that are pretty popular
rmmlg08 (8:28:48 PM): ok
rmmlg08 (8:29:13 PM): and how long before a conference do people typically decide to go
RolandBolser (8:29:22 PM): a month
RolandBolser (8:29:30 PM): minimum
SithLrdJohn (8:29:34 PM): We need the Chapter presidents and Reps to get members fired up to go. Kirk was always a good motivator at Illinois.
Nyeerrmm (8:29:47 PM): depends on how far away it is too
rmmlg08 (8:29:53 PM): so, if I send out a reminder for conferences 2 months before, that would be reasonable?
BZWingZero (8:30:11 PM): I know the UCF chapter is helping organize another conference out at KSC in a few months (april iirc0
RolandBolser (8:30:43 PM): send another one out 2 weeks later
RolandBolser (8:31:08 PM): the first time someone sees it, it might peak there interest. then that reminder gets them to make the flight arrangements, etc.
RolandBolser (8:31:16 PM): os that they can still get things cheap
rmmlg08 (8:31:17 PM): ok
rmmlg08 (8:31:25 PM): (just want to make sure I'm not spamming people)
RolandBolser (8:31:59 PM): also
RolandBolser (8:32:07 PM): don't advertise more than one event at a time
RolandBolser (8:32:22 PM): most people immediately ignore that
rmmlg08 (8:32:35 PM): ok
rmmlg08 (8:33:06 PM): so that leads to another ?
rmmlg08 (8:33:34 PM): how far down the line should I go when advertising conferences across the list
rmmlg08 (8:33:40 PM): (as in popularity)
rmmlg08 (8:33:49 PM): *across the lists
rmmlg08 (8:34:06 PM): eg. of ther conferences listed on conferences.php
rmmlg08 (8:34:16 PM): how many/which ones are noteworthy enough
RolandBolser (8:34:37 PM): ISDC, obv.
SithLrdJohn (8:35:31 PM): We've had good attendance at Goddard the last two years
SithLrdJohn (8:35:45 PM): and it's just around the corner
Nyeerrmm (8:35:53 PM): also look at whehter or not they encourage student involvement or not. its probably a good indication of whether they'll get anythign out of it
rmmlg08 (8:36:19 PM): ok, there's definitely a number that haven't been too student freidnly
lizeeb3 (8:37:11 PM): I would definitely keep goddard, space frontier, saic, basically all the ones that support us
rmmlg08 (8:37:36 PM): k
lizeeb3 (8:37:46 PM): the ieee one that costs $500 might be a different story
RolandBolser (8:38:13 PM): Yuri's Night is still early enough that people without a party near them could start one up
Nyeerrmm (8:38:14 PM): isdc... ill have some stuff from/for them pretty soon on student events
lizeeb3 (8:40:18 PM): other suggestions for the conferences page?
RolandBolser (8:40:55 PM): You could separate it
RolandBolser (8:41:07 PM): into things that we can contribute to and ones where we'd be spectators
rmmlg08 (8:41:32 PM): that could work
rmmlg08 (8:41:58 PM): anything else?
Nyeerrmm (8:43:00 PM): maybe a description of why conferences are good (networking, meeting other students, etc)
lizeeb3 (8:44:31 PM): Alright, if there are no more suggestions, I am turning it over to Arka
peoplefrommars (8:45:02 PM): yeah, so from next month we will have two formats of the nova
peoplefrommars (8:45:18 PM): one html and one in the pdf format for download
peoplefrommars (8:45:55 PM): so that people can easily read them anytime without having to download
peoplefrommars (8:46:24 PM): any other ideas???of making it more easily accesible
Nyeerrmm (8:47:00 PM): that sounds about as accessible as it can get on the internet
peoplefrommars (8:47:06 PM): thanks
BZWingZero (8:47:16 PM): If anyone has a good voice, maybe a podcast edition?
lizeeb3 (8:47:23 PM): yeah you guys are doing a great job
peoplefrommars (8:47:29 PM): yeah..i was planning that too
lizeeb3 (8:49:32 PM): Other announcements from anybody?
dandersonn43 (8:50:24 PM): SEDS Earth is posting weekly updates on the national seds chapters. Ours is to be up next.
lizeeb3 (8:51:07 PM): cool
lizeeb3 (8:52:20 PM): Last updates?
lizeeb3 (8:52:40 PM): Then the meeting is over
lizeeb3 (8:52:52 PM): Remember to go through your tickets!
RolandBolser (8:53:12 PM): Stay gold everybody
dandersonn43 (8:53:17 PM): Cya
BZWingZero (8:53:20 PM): gnight
SithLrdJohn (8:53:24 PM): later
peoplefrommars (8:53:38 PM): gnight
