Viridis321: well, while we wait for Josh...does anybody have any announcments?
Viridis321: updates, concerns, questions, etc.
Rocket Man JAM: I am not on the email list
Viridis321: which one the seds-chapter list?
jwayer2: No one e-mailed me back about the Apogee books deal, are you all still interested?
Viridis321: I will bring it up again at our general meeting tomorrow
Viridis321: and send a reminder uot with the notes from this meeting
Jedi8798: hi
Jedi8798: back
Viridis321: it's the man of the hour
Jedi8798: Just so I know who is who, could everyone state their name and chapter?
jdunn421: Jason Dunn, UCf
jwayer2: Jessica Wayer UIUC
prowlhockey: Thomas Manemeit, SLU
rmmlg08: Ryan McLinko, MIT
Rocket Man JAM: Jason Murphy Iowa state
Viridis321: Damion Lucas, UCF
Jedi8798: Joshua Nelson, UofA
Jedi8798: You done with updates D?
Viridis321: yep, unless I missed somebody or something
Viridis321: it's all yours
Jedi8798: Cool, well greetings everyone, my name's Josh, I'm the current Director of National Projects.
Jedi8798: Today we thought we would update you all on the status of the National Projects and have a sort of brainstorming session
Viridis321: sounds good
Jedi8798: At present time, I am running 4 different project efforts, the Zero-G project, SEDS Art Contest, SEDS Prize for NASA Business Competition, and SEDS Rocket Project
Jedi8798: For the first 3, are you all familiar with what we have intended, or should I summarize them? (Rocket project I will be going into depth about later)
jdunn421: i know them
jwayer2: please summerize
Jedi8798: Ok
MockM1AB: how's everyone doing Jedi8798: The Zero-G project is a re-hash of a project we did last year, where SEDS Chapters designed and constructed a research project
Jedi8798: to be flown in Zero-G at a very reduced price. The price reduction last year was supposed to come from National money, but the fundraising was planned
Jedi8798: concurrently with the project, but the fundraising fell through late in the game
Jedi8798: resulting in chapters having to fundraise themselves
MockM1AB: what is the reduced price?
Jedi8798: In the end, 2 chapters, SEDS-UW and SEDS-UCF were able to fund themselves and flew
Jedi8798: This year we are going to do it the right way, and fundraise all of teh money before we start accepting chapter applications
Jedi8798: Last year I believe we were planning it to be $1000 per seat
jdunn421: dont we have to pay for the whole plane now though?
Jedi8798: these days, yes
Jedi8798: thats what we were doing last year anyway
Jedi8798: 26 seats
jdunn421: right
uarda2003: Good evening every one Dhurata - PSU President
Jedi8798: We actually had more than enough SEDS chapters interested, but didnt get the money
jdunn421: well the experiment I flew needs another flight to be complete, so I am completely for helping this project
MockM1AB: what about the rocket project
Jedi8798: At present, we have a large list of possibel sources. If anyone is interested in helping fundraise, let me know
Jedi8798: I'm getting there Mock ;-)
jdunn421: tell me what I can do
Jedi8798: ok Jason, I'll send you an e-mail tonight or tommorow ;-)
jdunn421: thanks
Jedi8798: With the ZG project, we also are fundraising for a SEDS-Art Contest and a SEDS prize for the NASA Means Business competition
Jedi8798: the Art contest, to be brief, would basically be open to all college and high school students to submit space-themed art on a specific subject to b
Jedi8798: e judged by a panel of industry and space art professionals, then the prize presented at the next SEDS conference
Viridis321: when and where would this be judged at?
Viridis321: the conference?
Jedi8798: We will probally have the judges judge them all before the conference so we can tell the 'finalists' to ship the original to the conference for display
Viridis321: ok cool
Jedi8798: Darrell Cain and myself are working alot of the particulars of this project out, again, if you or anyone in your chapter is interested in helping plan or arrange it, get them in contact with me
Jedi8798: The above 2 projects, the ZG and Art contest, especially need people versed in graphic design or webdesign
Jedi8798: to help make advertisements/webcontent
joc 75: greetings
Jedi8798: Any more question on the ZG or Art contest before I move on to what you all want to hear about, the Rocket Project?
Jedi8798: Hey Darrell.
MockM1AB: what is required of the chapters for the fundrasing effort
Jedi8798: the Zero-G flight will probally require each chapter to raise a small percentage of the total seat cost themselves
Viridis321: there's also's Peter's offer out there still...he'll match us if we can raise $10,000
Viridis321: or course...there's still the issue of raising that money
MockM1AB: sounds good
Jedi8798: Which we'll definetly need considering how much ZG flights cost
Viridis321: $20,000 would cover a good number of flights
Jedi8798: Other than that, no particular 'requirement' of fundraising on the individual chapters, but we could use the help if anyone's interested
Jedi8798: Anything else?
Viridis321: nothing here
Jedi8798: allright
Jedi8798: Rocket Projedt
Jedi8798: Project*
Jedi8798: At the last SEDS Conference, a large number of chapters were for some sort of rocket competition
Jedi8798: since then we've approached the X-Prize Foundation about the possibility of a SEDS Rocket Competition at the XPrize Cup
Rocket Man JAM: WE have planes for one and are looking for more groups
Jedi8798: what Jason?
jdunn421: will it be specifically a hybrid competition at the x- prize cup?
Jedi8798: I'm getting to the details ;-)
jdunn421: sorry
Jedi8798: np
Rocket Man JAM: We have been working on a competition but we need more groups
Rocket Man JAM: it is an altitude comp., low impluse wins
Jedi8798: IC, well if you're interested in groups, you probally should send an e-mail out to SEDS chapters
Jedi8798: or if you would like to combine it with the competition at the Cup, you're more than welcome
Rocket Man JAM: as far as I know, someone has
Rocket Man JAM: I thought allen ball had sent you an e-mail
Jedi8798: I can double check my e-mail in a sec,
Jedi8798: for now lets go through what we are thinking about at the Cup
Jedi8798: The XPrize is working out the details for a competition at the Cup that they would actually like to get us going along with
Jedi8798: Preliminarily (they wont announce all the requirements/details till later this month) it would be a competition to launch
Jedi8798: a payload of about 100lbs to an altitude of ~ 20,000 feet, and you would need to repeat the feat multiple times in a row
Jedi8798: (sorry for the english units :-( )
Viridis321: would this all be shooting for this upcoming Cup?
Jedi8798: There would be a qualifying event before the Cup
Jedi8798: and the top groups get to go to the Cup
Jedi8798: then each sucessive year of the cup, the requirements will be larger
jdunn421: and the prize?
Jedi8798: undisclosed at present time
Jedi8798: but it will be significant
jdunn421: cool
Jedi8798: First thing I would like to know, do you guys think this is a pheasible prize for SEDS chapters to compete for?
Jedi8798: its definetly ambitious
Jedi8798: and there will be secondary prizes for things like landing accuracy, height, etc...
Jedi8798: And if SEDS gets involved, we'll definetly do some sort of prize for the SEDS chapter that places best
jdunn421: I think it is great. The first time around it will be tuff to get lots of chapters to have a rocket built in time
MockM1AB: are there any payload requirements to speak of
jdunn421: but as this competition continues i think all the chapters will begin to get involved
Viridis321: I agree...this October is coming up quick. But other than that, I think it's awesome
Jedi8798: as far as I have heard of, about 100lbs
Jedi8798: hopefully the competition will officially be announced by the end of the month
Jedi8798: so we can officially plan for SEDS involvement then
Viridis321: I would say yes
MockM1AB: I would as well
jdunn421: YES
Jedi8798: what about everyone else? any input?
JHarb 07: Im sorry im coming into this so late, but Im the Tech project director for the U of I SEDS, and I think the people in my group would like to compete
Jedi8798: And feel free to pose questions about what you would like to know. I can bug Will for more info ;-)
Viridis321: the only issue I would see would be the quick timeline and chapters having a hard time getting funding to participate
Viridis321: at least for this coming October...but like Jason said, after the first one, it should smooth out a lot
jdunn421: and this will be a big rocket too, so that will add difficulty
Jedi8798: yeah it would definetly be ambitious to compete
Viridis321: but that's what we're all about
Jedi8798: yeah 100lbs is quite alot.... Anyone have an idea on the size/class motor that would take?
JHarb 07: so it's a 100 lb payload that has to get to 20,000 ft correct?
jdunn421: yeah
Jedi8798: thats an approximation of the requirements right now.
Rocket Man JAM: m to n
Jedi8798: and you would have to be able to repeat the feat as m any times as possible in a day
jdunn421: yeah
Jedi8798: thats an approximation of the requirements right now.
Rocket Man JAM: m to n
Jedi8798: and you would have to be able to repeat the feat as m any times as possible in a day
JHarb 07: well, to launch anything that high powered you need FAA waivers right?
Rocket Man JAM: you are looking at 500-800 dollars per motor
JHarb 07: wow
jdunn421: well that is for solid fuel
Rocket Man JAM: yeah
jdunn421: i thought the cup was all about hybrid rockets
Rocket Man JAM: it will still be expensive
Viridis321: would the XPrize handle all of the FAA waivers/approvals
Jedi8798: they didnt specify hybrid or solid, I'll ask
Jedi8798: I assume they would Damion, but thats another good question
joc 75: probably would handle the waivers
joc 75: probably not the approvals
JHarb 07: but to test it before you'd have to launch close to home
JHarb 07: would Seds still be able to get through all of that?
JHarb 07: I know at the competitions it wouldn't be a problem
Jedi8798: its ambitious, but we're supposed to be about pushing the boundries of what students can do
Viridis321: i'm all for it
Jedi8798: the local testing/approval might be a problem
Jedi8798: but we'll have to look into that on a case by case basis, not sure what the state rules are
Viridis321: if you launch under a local organization (or NEFAR) you might be covered
jdunn421: and if others are competing too, it would look so good for seds to be having the best rockets
Rocket Man JAM: you could find a local high power launch to test at
JHarb 07: yeah
Jedi8798: yeah local rocket groups might be able to help
joc 75: that's what I was going to say
Jedi8798: especially if you say you are students
joc 75: the big ones are also in the summer
JHarb 07: i think it's a really cool idea
joc 75: but you have to be rated to put up the large rockets
joc 75: I think
Rocket Man JAM: is anyone else high power certified?
Jedi8798: we have one member who is going for his certification right now
Jedi8798: he just has to find the funds for the motors
Viridis321: usually you can get certified at the local launches by just moving up slowly and having successful launches
Rocket Man JAM: this kind of power would take a level three certification
joc 75: yeah
Jedi8798: how difficult is that?
Jedi8798: (for the non-rocket savvy)
JHarb 07: if you are starting with no certification at all?
joc 75: wait...are you level three rocketmanjam?
Rocket Man JAM: very difficult, it could take up to a year
Rocket Man JAM: no, im level one going for level 2
joc 75: we have one of them here...
joc 75: but not directly related to SEDS
Jedi8798: you might also be able to team with members from a local rocket club
Jedi8798: to have someone on your team with certification
JHarb 07: that'd be our only shot
Rocket Man JAM: all you need is one level 3 to sign off on your rocket
Viridis321: alright, any other questions, comments, concerns, etc?
JHarb 07: how are we going to keep in contact? chats like this each week/month??
Viridis321: we have these bi-weekly
joc 75: I have one...since I came in late
Jedi8798: I can continue to give updates at CoCs
joc 75: in relation to the art project
Jedi8798: sure D go ahead
Viridis321: every other Thursday
JHarb 07: ok
joc 75: at one point we're going to have a definitive checklist for the art project
joc 75: of specific tasks to be accomplished
joc 75: (at least that's the goal)
Jedi8798: yeah, specific timeline
joc 75: so if you find anyone who is interested
joc 75: it would probably be a great project to get involved nationally
joc 75: this is to individual chapter representatives
Jedi8798: definetly
joc 75: :-)
joc 75: that's all
Jedi8798: Anything else?
Jedi8798: And yes, if you are interested, or know anyone who is interested, have em talk to me ;-)
JHarb 07: Link to the contest deadlines/info?
Jedi8798: And be sure to pass on what you know about the competition
Jedi8798: There's a brief description on the seds.org page
