2007 SEDSIC Funding
From SEDSWiki
SEDS to India in September
Goals:
- Want SEDSAT-2 subsystem leads present
- Want at least one representative from each national branch of SEDS present
Assumptions:
- Thinking in USD
- 8 subsystem leaders for satellite
- 9 national branches
Solution:
POSSIBLE TRAVEL COSTS (1 US) x $1500 = $1500 (2 UK) x $1000 = $2000 (1 Philippines) x $1000 = $1000 (2 Canada) x $1500 = $3000 (1 Nepal) x $500 = $500 (3 India) x $100 = $300 (1 Mexico) x $1500 = $1500 (1 Nigeria) x $1000 = $1000 (1 Spain) x $1000 = $1000 _____________________________________ 13 students $11800
- Assume: I am not insane enough to think that funding 100% of this total cost is reasonable.
- Funding idea #1
- 3 travel awards for poster/paper contest -- 3 x $500 = $1500
- 8 "matching travel awards" for SEDS national reps -- 8 x $250 = $2250 (plus matched 9 x $250, but only available if reps also provide their own sponsored $250)
- Other funding done through SEDSAT-2 fundraising.
- TOTAL = $3750 (difficult, but reasonable)
RESULTS OF THIS FUNDING SCHEME
(1 US) x $1500 = $1500 - $500 - $250 = $750 ( - $250 = $500 )
(2 UK) x $1000 = $2000 - $500 - $250 = $1250 ( - $250 = $1000 )
(1 Philippines) x $1000 = $1000 - $0 - $250 = $750 ( - $250 = $500 )
(2 Canada) x $1500 = $3000 - $500 - $250 = $2250 ( - $250 = $2000 )
(1 Nepal) x $500 = $500 - $0 - $250 = $250 ( - $250 = $0 )
(3 India) x $100 = $300 - $0 - $250 = $50 ( - $250 = -$200 )
(1 Mexico) x $1500 = $1500 - $0 - $250 = $1250 ( - $250 = $1000 )
(1 Nigeria) x $1000 = $1000 - $0 - $250 = $750 ( - $250 = $500 )
(1 Spain) x $1000 = $1000 - $0 - $250 = $750 ( - $250 = $500 )

13 students $11800 - $1500 - $2250 = $8050 ( - $2250 = $5800 )
( minus matching funds )
- There are problems with this scheme:
- Not all countries will have reps attend... but maybe there will be more national branches by then anyway
- This scheme leads to rules:
- Will only sponsor students up to total cost of travel, i.e., if it costs $200 to travel to conference and student wins $500 award, only $200 will be given and rest will remain for sponsoring other students. The principle is that the funding is for students to attend the event, not to make a profit. (so the listing where the total for Indian students sums to -$200 is a bit off)
- Matching sponsors should be contacted for verification
- Should be a "latest date" for joining SEDS to receive benefits of funding, i.e., starting new national branch in August would change funding required
- Exceptions should be made, especially considering a country's HDI
SEDS-Earth 2007 Conference Matching Funds Grant
SEDS-Earth is awarding one $250 grant for every national chapter that sends a representative to the 2007 International Conference. Certain restrictions apply and participants should read the criteria listed below thoroughly before applying for the grant. 1. Only one $250 grant is offered for one student per national branch. 2. The national branch must be in good standing at least 5 months prior to the 2007 Conference. 3. As this is a matching funds grant, an applicant’s home national branch is expected to fund an additional $250 of the participant’s conference-related expenses. If the applicant’s home branch is unable to do so, please attach a detailed description of the reason along with the application. Some exceptions may be granted. 4. Proof of national branch funding for the applicant must be presented. Acceptable forms include a carbon copy of check made out to the student from the national branch or university, original receipts along with the matching bank statement of the chapter, or written and signed statement by participant and national branch chairperson that the Funds were matched. 5. If the total cost of the applicant’s conference-related expenses is less than $250, total grant amount will be decreased accordingly. 6. Proof of conference-related expenses totaling at least $500 must be provided. Acceptable forms of proof include receipt for plane ticket or hotel expenditures. 7. The $250 will be awarded to the student in the form of a check at the conference. 8. All applications must be postmarked by August 17, 2007. 9. Recipients of the Matching Funds Grant will be notified by email by September 3, 2007. 10. To apply, send your name, address, email, name of sponsoring national branch, and proof of sponsorship by national branch along with a brief (2000 character) explanation of how participation in the conference will be beneficial to you to the following address: Kirk Kittell 1 Main Street Awesomeville, World 00000
