[17:58] danderson Beck: Hi [17:58] You: we'll wait a bit for others [18:06] You: alright i am going to go poke ppl online [18:07] Gerard Salyut: k [18:07] You: OK well the two things wwe need to discuss today are 1. possible scrapping of the art prize and 2. the rocket competition rules [18:07] Gerard Salyut: yay [18:08] Gerard Salyut: a Josh meeting eh? [18:08] Gerard Salyut: (sorry bout not making last meeting) [18:08] You: both have to do with Special Projects [18:08] You: so Josh, whenever you would like to begin w/ either topic go ahead [18:08] You: (ryan is on his way) [18:08] Gerard Salyut: ok [18:09] Gerard Salyut: Art project: As of right now, about 10 days before the deadline, we only have 4 submissions to the art project [18:09] Ryanblah Qinan is Online [18:09] Gerard Salyut: at least 1 of which is plagerized [18:09] Gerard Salyut: Someone literally took a Cassini photo and submitted it as their own artwork [18:09] Gerard Salyut: lol [18:09] Ryanblah Qinan: sry am late, meeting ran over [18:09] Gerard Salyut: np Ryan [18:09] Gerard Salyut: least you showed [18:09] Ryanblah Qinan: oh wow, where is everyone [18:09] Gerard Salyut: And the other 3 submissions arent of any quality [18:10] Gerard Salyut: So I would much rather cancel the art competition for this year [18:10] Gerard Salyut: save everything, and carry the prize over to next year [18:10] Gerard Salyut: revamp the rules slightly [18:10] Gerard Salyut: and re-announce at Space Vision [18:10] Gerard Salyut: that will give us a full year [18:10] danderson Beck: I'm inclinded to agree [18:10] Gerard Salyut: as opposed to 4 months [18:10] Gerard Salyut: lead time [18:10] You: yes I see your point [18:10] Gerard Salyut: If we do this, I want it to look good for SEDS [18:11] Gerard Salyut: I would rather cancel it, than have a competition where we're giving awards for a crayon drawing that a 10 year old could have done [18:11] Gerard Salyut: which right now, we will be doing [18:11] Gerard Salyut: if we have it [18:11] BTYoung Yifu: sounds reasonable to me [18:11] Ryanblah Qinan: agreed [18:11] You: ok [18:11] You: I will get in contact with Mark Craig and tell him about the situation [18:11] Flight Band: All Go [18:11] Darrell Abel is Online [18:11] You: I will let you guys know if something will change regarding the prize [18:12] You: (his donation) [18:12] Gerard Salyut: ok [18:12] You: Alright then that is settled [18:12] Gerard Salyut: ask him if he is willing to have it carry over [18:12] Gerard Salyut: to next year [18:12] You: right that is what i meant [18:12] Gerard Salyut: yeah :-) [18:12] Gerard Salyut: thanks Liz [18:12] Gerard Salyut: ok [18:12] Gerard Salyut: rocket competition [18:12] Gerard Salyut: some good feedback starting to come in [18:13] Gerard Salyut: now that schools have started to look over the rules [18:13] Gerard Salyut: one major piece of feedback [18:13] Gerard Salyut: is that people want more time [18:13] Gerard Salyut: they're thinking that 6 months from now (the current deadline) [18:13] Gerard Salyut: is wayyy too soon [18:13] Gerard Salyut: so most of the schools I talked with would like the launch date pushed back to the X PRIZE Cup in 09 [18:13] Gerard Salyut: 08**** [18:13] Gerard Salyut: if there is one [18:14] Gerard Salyut: and if there isnt, then just doing it in next October [18:14] Gerard Salyut: (actually, if they announce no cup, might be nice to do it at next year's conference [18:14] Gerard Salyut: So what do you guys think? [18:14] Gerard Salyut: about pushing the competition date to the 08 cup? [18:14] Ryanblah Qinan: well, from our side, we're currently targeting the original deadline [18:14] Ryanblah Qinan: but pushing back the date would definitely be helpful [18:14] Gerard Salyut: Do you see it as doable? [18:15] BTYoung Yifu: I thought the deal was they didn't want to be the primary date though? [18:15] danderson Beck: well, if the cup is canceled, seems like it might be very hard to have it at space vision [18:15] Gerard Salyut: it would basically be 6 months from today [18:15] danderson Beck: unless space vision is in a remote area [18:15] Gerard Salyut: :-) [18:15] danderson Beck: not MIT [18:15] Ryanblah Qinan: or a non-remote one [18:15] Gerard Salyut: lol [18:15] Gerard Salyut: yeah [18:15] Ryanblah Qinan: ie, I wouldn't want to hve done it this year [18:15] Gerard Salyut: yeah definetly not [18:15] Gerard Salyut: wouldnt be able to do it in the northeast [18:15] Ryanblah Qinan: b/c you'd have to travel really far to get somewhere to launch [18:15] Gerard Salyut: or florida [18:16] Gerard Salyut: woul dhave to be west/midwest [18:16] Gerard Salyut: UofI, Tucson, Texas [18:16] BTYoung Yifu: even then its hard, we're too close to dallas and houston and austin to be much good [18:16] BTYoung Yifu: or our faa is just especially grumpy [18:16] Ryanblah Qinan: in other words, I wouldn;t be comfortable limiting the bids based on such restrictions [18:16] Gerard Salyut: yeah [18:17] You: yes [18:17] Gerard Salyut: So first I'd say, arguements towards having it in 6 months, or 1 year? [18:17] You: so basically, there is no interest in having it for 6 mo....correct? [18:17] Gerard Salyut: slight interest, but no problems with 12 months [18:18] BTYoung Yifu: we haven't looked at a timeline yet, so i won't argue with pushing it back [18:18] Gerard Salyut: outside of people are a little worried that chapters will delay starting on it [18:18] Gerard Salyut: unless it is sooner [18:18] Ryanblah Qinan: you could bump up deadlines on some demonstration flights [18:18] Ryanblah Qinan: to disallow that [18:18] Gerard Salyut: yeah [18:18] Ryanblah Qinan: w/o making everyon think that you're holding their hands [18:19] Gerard Salyut: ok [18:19] Gerard Salyut: yeah [18:19] Gerard Salyut: how about a 6 month list of benchmarks? [18:19] Gerard Salyut: that people should have reached [18:19] You: i think that would be useful [18:19] Gerard Salyut: 9 months out, you must have registered. If you havent, then there's a fee [18:19] Gerard Salyut: 6 months out, 1 list of benchmarks [18:19] Gerard Salyut: and a 3 month out list of benchmarks [18:19] Gerard Salyut: followed by a pre-flight benchmarks [18:20] Gerard Salyut: I can get these written into the rules by the end of this weekend [18:20] Gerard Salyut: and published [18:20] Ryanblah Qinan: what was the target release date again [18:20] Gerard Salyut: rules have been released [18:20] Ryanblah Qinan: well this next version [18:20] Gerard Salyut: I was targetting a 'final' version by October 1st [18:20] Ryanblah Qinan: k [18:20] Gerard Salyut: a competition version basically [18:20] You: ok [18:21] Gerard Salyut: ok. So look for a mostly finished version of rules going out Sunday night [18:21] Gerard Salyut: to exec [18:21] Gerard Salyut: and a few others [18:22] Gerard Salyut: with a 'competition' guidelines going out October 1st [18:22] Gerard Salyut: so the official release will be over a year from competition [18:22] You: k [18:23] Gerard Salyut: Any other input on the rocket competition? [18:23] BTYoung Yifu: does it seem like theres a lot of interest? [18:23] Gerard Salyut: I'm going to meet with guys from Raytheon, Honeywell, and Boeing tommorow [18:23] Gerard Salyut: maybe ATK [18:23] Gerard Salyut: (they're in town for a career fair, so inviting out to dinner to talk about it... see if they take me up on it) [18:23] Gerard Salyut: as for interest [18:24] Gerard Salyut: UofA, MIT, TAMU, UCF [18:24] Gerard Salyut: are potentially interest [18:24] Gerard Salyut: UCF is a little overwealmed [18:24] Gerard Salyut: MIT and UofA already have teams getting together [18:24] You: make sure you email Damion and get him to announce it at a CoC and repeatedly send out emails [18:24] Gerard Salyut: yup [18:24] BTYoung Yifu: we will be as of next week [18:25] Gerard Salyut: cool [18:25] Gerard Salyut: I got to run actually, need to train new telescope operators [18:25] Gerard Salyut: any more quick questions? [18:27] You: ok (sorry had to run out of the room for a sec) [18:27] Gerard Salyut: ok [18:27] Gerard Salyut: later! [18:27] danderson Beck: Bye [18:27] Gerard Salyut is Offline [18:27] You: what i am most owrried about is publicizing the event [18:27] You: *worried [18:27] You: I think announcing it at SV would be helpful [18:28] Ryanblah Qinan: that always seems to be the hardest part of any of these kinds of things [18:28] You: yes [18:28] Ryanblah Qinan: I can add a workshop fr it too [18:28] You: That would be cool [18:29] You: And as much as everyone hates mass emails, I think every so often people need a little nudge [18:29] You: I am going to ask Brian to put an annoucement in NOVA [18:29] Ryanblah Qinan: along lines of publicizing stuff, I would like to throw in a shameless plug: for the student research poster presentations at SV [18:29] Ryanblah Qinan: talk to people in your chapters about presenting stuff [18:30] You: oh yeah, how is that going? [18:30] Ryanblah Qinan: so I haven't yet received any submissions [18:30] Ryanblah Qinan: although I know of two people who want to [18:31] Ryanblah Qinan: so I'm a bit worried as to what the interest level is [18:31] Ryanblah Qinan: we can probably get anumber of people from mit [18:31] danderson Beck: what chapters are planning on trips to space vision? [18:31] You: well, from what i have seen at school, the only students who have posters are ones who have presented their undergrad research at conferences [18:32] You: and unfortunately that isn't too many [18:32] danderson Beck: I'm sure UoI could have a meeting where this is announced [18:32] You: yeah [18:32] BTYoung Yifu: something else to bring up at the next CoC [18:33] You: i will email damion [18:33] You: other ews or announcements? [18:34] Ryanblah Qinan: regarding XPC [18:34] Ryanblah Qinan: it looks like we should have a strong presence there [18:34] Ryanblah Qinan: from a number of responses I have gotten to my email [18:35] Ryanblah Qinan: I'm working on the exact details for our booth there [18:35] Ryanblah Qinan: but it looks like we will have at least a core of 6 people at the booth [18:35] danderson Beck: thats alot [18:35] Darrell Abel is Offline [18:35] Ryanblah Qinan: ie I have to give her 6 names [18:35] danderson Beck: what do have in the booth again? [18:35] Ryanblah Qinan: that's another thing to decide [18:36] Ryanblah Qinan: if we can get some hardware from projects that seds chapters are working on, that would be awesome [18:36] Ryanblah Qinan: otherwise, we can just have a bunch of information on the various seds projects [18:36] Ryanblah Qinan: but I would like to see hardware if at all possible [18:36] You: we should have copies of the sponsorship brochure ready by then (i hope) [18:36] danderson Beck: we will [18:37] You: Danderson, are you for sure going? [18:37] danderson Beck: To X Prize? yes [18:37] You: ok make sure to bring a bunch of copies [18:37] danderson Beck: will do [18:37] You: I do not know if I will be attending [18:38] Ryanblah Qinan: it's unfortunately looking like I won't be able to [18:38] Ryanblah Qinan: btwn sv and a number of other things [18:38] Ryanblah Qinan: but I will attempt to do as much coordinationg between people before-the-fact [18:39] Ryanblah Qinan: which is promising since people who are planning on going seem to be informing me about it this time [18:39] You: cool [18:39] You: other suggestions for the booth? [18:40] Ryanblah Qinan: if you have anything, just email me [18:40] Ryanblah Qinan: I'll be sending specific requests for ideas to the chapters who are planning on attending [18:40] Ryanblah Qinan: (who have told me so far) [18:40] You: ok that works [18:40] You: any other announcements for this meeting? [18:41] You: ok then we are done for tonight [18:41] danderson Beck: Night [18:41] You: thanks for your comments [18:41] You: bye
