[19:06] *** AeroAggie84 has joined the chat.
[19:06] Jedi8798: (1 sec and we'll get started)
[19:06] Jedi8798: Allright
[19:07] Jedi8798: First up, Jim Volp is joining us
tonight from Spain, and would like to talk to you guys
about his interest in getting involved in SEDS
[19:07] Jedi8798: This is follow up to the email I
forwarded to you guys before
[19:07] Jedi8798: Jim?
[19:08] jim.volp@gmail.com: Thanks
[19:08] jim.volp@gmail.com: What it comes down to is
that I can host people at my house close to MAdrid
[19:09] jim.volp@gmail.com: In return I would like
whoever is interested to help me help you
[19:09] jim.volp@gmail.com: I am interested to see if
SEDS can be developed more globally
[19:09] jim.volp@gmail.com: But first I need to learn
a lot about the current SEDS and you can help me with
that
[19:10] jim.volp@gmail.com: For those that do not know
me, I have a long history with Space Generation
[19:10] jim.volp@gmail.com: Space Generation = SGAC
[19:10] jim.volp@gmail.com: SGAC has a couple of
strengths but also one big weakness
[19:10] jim.volp@gmail.com: Volunteer time is critical
and so activities are low
[19:11] jim.volp@gmail.com: I think SEDS is much
stronger in that
[19:11] jim.volp@gmail.com: Probably cause students
can if supported by their Uni/prof invest more time
[19:11] jim.volp@gmail.com: What do you think about
such idea?
[19:11] Jedi8798: If you got my previous email Jim,
[19:12] Jedi8798: We've already discussed your offer,
and unfortunetly none of us can afford the time or
money to fly out to Spain, especially in the middle of
the semester
[19:12] Jedi8798: But we are interested in getting you
involved helping build SEDS as an organization
[19:12] Jedi8798: I can talk with you outside of this
meeting to help get you up to speed on the current
status of the SEDS organization
[19:12] jim.volp@gmail.com: Excellent
[19:13] Jedi8798: and we're going to host an
organizational teleconference in a few weeks
[19:13] jim.volp@gmail.com: OK
[19:13] Jedi8798: but unfortunetly most of our work
will probally need to be done virtually for now
[19:13] Jedi8798: there are two SEDS conferences
coming up in your area though that you might want to
add to your calander
[19:14] jim.volp@gmail.com: I just wanted to grap this
opportunity to make sure that people have no problems
with an outsider like me using SEDS in any way
[19:14] Jedi8798: well it depends by what you mean in
'using'
[19:14] jim.volp@gmail.com: My intentions are good
[19:14] Jedi8798: we'd love to help you get involved
in building a stronger SEDS
[19:15] jim.volp@gmail.com: Of course I will most
likely not come to your geographic terrain
[19:15] jim.volp@gmail.com: My focus is non-US
[19:15] jim.volp@gmail.com: You guys are doing a great
job already
[19:15] Jedi8798: So in conclusion, I think we need to
talk more outside of this meeting, and update you on
the current status of the SEDS organization
[19:15] jim.volp@gmail.com: I can learn a lot from you
and am looking forward getting your advice
[19:16] jim.volp@gmail.com: Great
[19:16] jim.volp@gmail.com: Have a good meeting
further
[19:16] Jedi8798: Thanks Jim
[19:16] Jedi8798: We appreciate you stopping by
[19:16] jim.volp@gmail.com: Hope to see you in
Glasgow!
[19:16] jim.volp@gmail.com: = IAC
[19:16] Jedi8798: *nods*
[19:17] Jedi8798: If theres nothing else, I'd like to
get us back on our agenda
[19:17] Jedi8798: First up, Darrell and Brian with the
CoC update
[19:17] DarrellDCain: Alright, Brian
[19:18] Nyeerrmm: Well, as the representative to the
CoC this month, I have one request from them for the
exec board to do
[19:18] *** jim.volp@gmail.com has left the chat.
[19:18] Nyeerrmm: they want to formally request that
we look for an alternative site for the rocket-baloon
contest
[19:19] *** hydrogenlithium has been invited to the
group chat.
[19:19] *** hydrogenlithium has joined the chat.
[19:19] Nyeerrmm: one of the chapters mentioned the
possibility of an aircraft carrier and will pursue
that, but want us to look for anything else
[19:19] Jedi8798: instead of Spaceport America?
[19:19] DarrellDCain: the exact phrase of the request
was:
[19:19] Nyeerrmm: other than XPC
[19:19] Jedi8798: What was the reasoning, if I may
ask?
[19:20] Nyeerrmm: i figure you're on top of it already
Josh, they just didnt know that you were
[19:20] *** DarrellDCain has left the chat.
[19:20] *** DarrellDCain has been invited to the group
chat.
[19:20] *** DarrellDCain has joined the chat.
[19:20] DarrellDCain: the exact statement of the
request
[19:20] DarrellDCain: was as follows
[19:21] *** KellyMann10 has left the chat.
[19:21] DarrellDCain: I'd like to formally suggest to
the Exec Board that they discuss possible alternatives
for launch locations and present their thoughts to us
next month
[19:21] DarrellDCain: it passed with a vote of 10-0-0
[19:22] Jedi8798: Did they intend this to mean sites
other than New Mexico?
[19:22] Jedi8798: or just not at the X PRIZE Cup event
itself?
[19:22] *** KellyMann10 has been invited to the group
chat.
[19:22] *** You have been disconnected. Tue Mar 04
19:22:45 2008.
[19:23] Jedi8798: (am I still in?)
[19:23] Jedi8798: (got DCed)
[19:23] rmmlg08: y
[19:23] Nyeerrmm: yes
[19:23] DarrellDCain: can people read me?
[19:23] Nyeerrmm: yes
[19:23] Jedi8798: did anyone respond to my message
asking if they meant outside of New Mexico, or just
not at the X PRIZE Cup?
[19:23] DarrellDCain: here
[19:23] Jedi8798: (sorry AIM burped on me)
[19:23] DarrellDCain: DarrellDCain (9:20:29 PM): the
exact statement of the request
DarrellDCain (9:20:33 PM): was as follows
[19:24] Nyeerrmm: from what i gathered all they want
us to do is what you're already doing, they just
weren't aware that you had already done so
[19:24] DarrellDCain: DarrellDCain (9:21:10 PM): I'd
like to formally suggest to the Exec Board that they
discuss possible alternatives for launch locations and
present their thoughts to us next month

[19:24] Nyeerrmm: also places like the Oklahoma
spaceport were mentioned in passing
[19:24] DarrellDCain: it passed with a vote of 10-0-0
[19:24] Jedi8798: we heard all of that Darrell
[19:24] Jedi8798: k
[19:24] DarrellDCain: sorry..thought you were burped
before that
[19:24] Jedi8798: I'll present the current
alternatives then at hte next CoC
[19:24] *** KellyMann10 has been invited to the group
chat.
[19:25] *** KellyMann10 has joined the chat.
[19:25] KellyMann10: hi people, sorry, my AIM crashed
[19:25] Jedi8798: Anything further to update us on
CoC?
[19:26] Nyeerrmm: that was the only action item given
to us
[19:26] DarrellDCain: they passed the constitution
[19:27] Jedi8798: Good.
[19:27] DarrellDCain: it was a really short meeting
[19:27] DarrellDCain: I was pleased
[19:27] Jedi8798: good
[19:27] Jedi8798: along those lines, any significant
updates from the various chapters?
[19:29] DarrellDCain: not really
[19:29] DarrellDCain: couple chapters preparing for
rockoon competition
[19:29] DarrellDCain: couple chapters looking into
attending ISDC, Spacevision 2008 and March Storm
[19:30] Jedi8798: Good, let Ryan know who is planning
on going
[19:30] rmmlg08: speaking of such, I've emailed most
of the chapters individually
[19:30] rmmlg08: please help by pinging your chapters
[19:30] hydrogenlithium: what's the march storm?
[19:31] rmmlg08: going to dc to help lobby for space
[19:31] Jedi8798: Basically it is a space policy push
on washington DC
[19:31] hydrogenlithium: when is it?
[19:31] Jedi8798: Ask Ryan, Darrell, or myself outside
of the meeting if you want more info
[19:31] hydrogenlithium: ok
[19:32] Jedi8798: Ok next on the list
[19:32] *** RolandBolser has joined the chat.
[19:32] Jedi8798: SEDS Forum moderators
[19:33] Jedi8798: Kirk has asked if the SEDS Exec
Board members would like to volunteer to moderate teh
forums
[19:33] Jedi8798: Kirk and I have been doing it for a
while
[19:33] Jedi8798: but Kirk would like more SEDS
members to step up
[19:34] Jedi8798: basically the only duties are
deleting the occasional spam message
[19:34] Jedi8798: and trying to promote conversation
on the forums
[19:34] Jedi8798: Is anyone interested in becoming a
forum moderator and helping us out there?
[19:34] hydrogenlithium: how much spam is out there?
[19:34] Jedi8798: It varies
[19:34] Jedi8798: maybe 3-4 messages a day
[19:34] Jedi8798: sometimes more, sometimes less
[19:34] Jedi8798: with more than 1 moderator, it only
takes a few minutes to quickly scan for any spam
[19:35] Jedi8798: Its pretty obvious if it is spam or
not
[19:35] Jedi8798: Any volunteers?
[19:35] rmmlg08: I would say yes, except, to put it
nicely, I suck at forums
[19:36] Jedi8798: Well if anyone can help out, let me
or Kirk know
[19:36] Jedi8798: Next item: ISDC Update
[19:36] Jedi8798: Jake, how we doing in ISDC planning?
[19:37] RolandBolser: I haven't been able to get on
the calls as much as I would like but
[19:38] RolandBolser: I've been in contact with the
new person who is helping us and looking through stuff
to see where we can help out
[19:38] Jedi8798: Any word on the speaker list or
becoming Affiliates?
[19:38] Jedi8798: and setting up the SEDS sessions?
[19:39] RolandBolser: the sessions are definite of
course, but last tiem I talked to the lady, she said
they were voting on it soon
[19:39] RolandBolser: or rather
[19:39] RolandBolser: just a secf
[19:39] RolandBolser: they were trying to finish up
the list with confirmations
[19:39] RolandBolser: if I make any sense
[19:39] rmmlg08: is it karina you've been talking to
[19:40] rmmlg08: or someone else
[19:40] RolandBolser: yeah
[19:40] Jedi8798: Ok, keep us updated on that Jake
[19:40] Jedi8798: I'd like to start pushing the
chapters to think about ISDC
[19:40] Jedi8798: and going
[19:40] rmmlg08: did you agree with my appx assesment
of seds volunteers
[19:40] Jedi8798: it helps if we have stuff locked in
[19:40] rmmlg08: yeah, I've been trying that
[19:41] rmmlg08: to get karina a good count on num
volunteers
[19:41] rmmlg08: since they're really trying to push
that this year
[19:41] RolandBolser: yeah, you gave yours and I saw
that
[19:41] RolandBolser: your estimate on teh number of
people attending
[19:41] Jedi8798: Ok, anything else about ISDC?
[19:42] RolandBolser: and I agree that will be about
what we will see
[19:42] rmmlg08: darrell, is the google doc of
chapters the up-to-date chapter contacts
[19:42] RolandBolser: not at the moment
[19:42] DarrellDCain: no
[19:42] rmmlg08: since people don't seem to be
responding
[19:42] rmmlg08: can you either update it
[19:42] DarrellDCain: yep
[19:42] rmmlg08: or send me the updated list
[19:42] DarrellDCain: I'll do both
[19:42] DarrellDCain: the latter first
[19:42] Jedi8798: please keep the google doc as the
most updated
[19:42] DarrellDCain: yep
[19:42] rmmlg08: ok, then I'll re-attempt to get
volunteer counts
[19:42] Jedi8798: since we all have access to that
[19:42] Jedi8798: I'd like to keep the entire board
informed on that
[19:43] Jedi8798: If there's nothing else on ISDC,
Rocket update
[19:43] Jedi8798: currently we have 3 chapters who
have submitted Letters of Intent for the competition
[19:43] Jedi8798: MIT, Iowa, Caltech
[19:43] Jedi8798: I think WPI is interested as well
[19:44] rmmlg08: did wpi not send in their letter of
intent
[19:44] rmmlg08: (thought I saw that)
[19:44] Jedi8798: they did, but was missing a few
things
[19:44] rmmlg08: k
[19:44] Jedi8798: not going to penalize them
[19:44] Jedi8798: Anyway, I think I'm going to push
the final deadline on that back a little more, just to
encourage other groups to compete
[19:44] Jedi8798: 4 is barely enough to warrant the
competition
[19:45] rmmlg08: when was the deadline
[19:45] Jedi8798: March 1st I believe is what I said
[19:45] Jedi8798: though I mentioned that it may be
pushed back further
[19:45] rmmlg08: yeah, probably a good idea then
[19:45] Jedi8798: originally it was supposed to be
February 1st
[19:46] Jedi8798: Please encourage any chapters you
talk to to compete :-)
[19:46] Jedi8798: Any questions on rocket project?
[19:46] DarrellDCain: just a note
[19:46] DarrellDCain: by chapter updates I only see UA
as another possible rocket project group
[19:46] Jedi8798: UofA's rocket project group folded
unfortunetly
[19:46] DarrellDCain: that said...Caltech did not
mention they were considering in their last update
[19:47] Jedi8798: they submitted a letter of intent
though mentioned that they were on tenative ground
[19:47] Jedi8798: but just wanted to get the
submission in
[19:48] Jedi8798: Ok, Ryan Goodnight had a quick
update he wanted to insert before he has to jet
[19:48] Jedi8798: Ryan?
[19:48] *** hydrogenlithium has left the chat.
[19:48] AeroAggie84: sorry

[19:48] *** hydrogenlithium has been invited to the
group chat.
[19:48] AeroAggie84: ok...i am going up to Dallas next
week to work on getting 501c3 set up
[19:48] *** hydrogenlithium has joined the chat.
[19:49] AeroAggie84: i have been collecting documents
from the organizations past, and I already have
everything that John E. gave me
[19:49] AeroAggie84: does anyone know where any of the
previous 501c3 filings are?
[19:49] rmmlg08: you mean besides somewhere in the
boston offices?
[19:49] AeroAggie84: yeah...like do we have a copy of
any of them?
[19:50] rmmlg08: I do not
[19:50] rmmlg08: I neglected to make copies of the
things john sent me before turning them in
[19:50] Jedi8798: I looked in the UASEDS files
[19:50] Jedi8798: the ones here are blank
[19:50] Jedi8798: old extra copies
[19:50] Jedi8798: I'll look again tonight
[19:50] AeroAggie84: ok...thats what I was afraid
of...ok that would be great
[19:51] Jedi8798: Anything else Ryan?
[19:51] AeroAggie84: well i am going to take all of
this up to D next week and get the ball rolling...if
you all find anything before then please email me so i
can take as much with me as possible
[19:51] AeroAggie84: other than that i am just trying
to survive midterms
[19:51] AeroAggie84: so that is all from me
[19:53] Jedi8798: K
[19:53] Jedi8798: Next up: Possible punative actions
against chapters who do not submit updates or show to
CoC
[19:53] Jedi8798: Darrell?
[19:54] *** AeroAggie84 has left the chat.
[19:54] DarrellDCain: yes
[19:54] *** hydrogenlithium has left the chat.
[19:54] DarrellDCain: so...two chapters missed the CoC
meeting last week
[19:55] DarrellDCain: I need punative action to
threaten chapters with
[19:55] DarrellDCain: similarly two chapters have
missed chapter updates
[19:55] DarrellDCain: now..this isn't so bad
[19:55] DarrellDCain: since we have 15 chapters
[19:55] DarrellDCain: but I can't allow some chapters
to get away with this
[19:55] DarrellDCain: one suggestion was an increase
on chapter dues
[19:56] Jedi8798: Should there be several tiers?
[19:56] DarrellDCain: not sure
[19:56] DarrellDCain: the suggestion I thought was
humourous was doubling
[19:56] DarrellDCain: each time
[19:56] DarrellDCain: a first warning
[19:56] Jedi8798: I think something along a tierd
system would probably be best
[19:56] DarrellDCain: probably
[19:56] DarrellDCain: what would be the highest level
tier?
[19:57] DarrellDCain: I think I can come up with an
appropiate system if I knew how high we were willing
to go
[19:57] rmmlg08: toenail pulling
[19:57] DarrellDCain: being a chapter requires certain
responsibilities
[19:57] Jedi8798: most severe? executive board
investigation and possible chapter disbandment
[19:57] DarrellDCain: oh
[19:57] DarrellDCain: sorry
[19:57] rmmlg08: we did have something about that in
the constitution, didn't we
[19:57] DarrellDCain: yes
[19:57] Jedi8798: yup
[19:57] DarrellDCain: we can do that
[19:57] rmmlg08: about constantly missing meetings
[19:57] Jedi8798: thats the most severe level
[19:58] DarrellDCain: the first action is to get a new
chapter rep
[19:58] DarrellDCain: but some of these chapter reps
are presidents
[19:58] DarrellDCain: specifically..the ones I'm
dealing with
[19:58] DarrellDCain: that are missing
[19:58] Jedi8798: Darrell could you write up a list of
possible punative actions, and your suggested levels?
[19:58] DarrellDCain: yep
[19:58] DarrellDCain: I guess the question I was
getting at
[19:59] DarrellDCain: is if we were to use increased
dues as punishment
[19:59] DarrellDCain: how high should the monetary
amount go?
[19:59] Jedi8798: probably shouldnt be too horrible
[19:59] Jedi8798: at most double
[19:59] DarrellDCain: 50?
[20:00] Jedi8798: yeah, with the possibility of appeal
[20:00] DarrellDCain: hmm...alright..I'll scale
appropiately
[20:00] Jedi8798: but those three we have already
[20:00] Jedi8798: new chapter rep
[20:00] Jedi8798: increased dues
[20:00] Jedi8798: and disbanning the chapter
[20:00] Jedi8798: seem to be enough
[20:00] DarrellDCain: alright
[20:00] Jedi8798: too many possible punishments and it
gets too complicated
[20:00] DarrellDCain: I'm done with this item then
[20:00] Jedi8798: k
[20:01] Jedi8798: I'm going to scratch the last item
as I wasnt able to get in contact with Josh before the
meeting
[20:01] Jedi8798: Any further items?
[20:01] KellyMann10: none from me
[20:01] Jedi8798: HaoQi is requesting that after next
weeks meetings we have an expansion brainstorming
session.
[20:01] Jedi8798: So if you're interested in
expansion, please stay after next weeks meeting
[20:02] Jedi8798: If there's nothing else, meeting
adjurned.
