Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (9:17:52 PM): and one other item:
Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (9:18:23 PM): exec powers decision: that if an immediate decision is needed between Executive Board meetings, the chair can make a decision on behalf of the exec board, if chair cannot be reached reasonably, the vice chair can make the decision.
Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (9:18:29 PM): the decision must be reported and justified at next Exec meeting
Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (9:19:20 PM): also on the forums issue:
bld175ae (9:20:04 PM) has been invited.
Invitation result for buddy bld175ae : bld175ae is not available.

Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (9:20:37 PM): you can note your interest on thisa end to webmaster@seds.org
Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (9:21:02 PM): that is all I had from exec updates; questions for me or exec in general
Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (9:21:08 PM): :
Darrell Cain, Director of Chapter Affairs (9:22:49 PM): alright
Darrell Cain, Director of Chapter Affairs (9:23:04 PM): I'll assume that based on this there aren't questions?
Jonathan Gross, Penn State (9:23:28 PM): i dont have any.
Darrell Cain, Director of Chapter Affairs (9:23:29 PM): we'll move on to the next item then
Darrell Cain, Director of Chapter Affairs (9:24:05 PM): last CoC meeting there was a request from CoC for SEDS exec to present information about the rocket competition at the next CoC meeting, specifically on competition location
Darrell Cain, Director of Chapter Affairs (9:24:18 PM): Josh Nelson is here to present on that issue
Darrell Cain, Director of Chapter Affairs (9:24:23 PM): I'm now giving the floor to Josh
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (9:24:54 PM): Good evening everyone
Justin Richardson, Iowa State (9:25:33 PM): evening
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (9:25:38 PM): First on the competition itself: The FAA has given preliminary approval to the competition rules. There are several small issues to work out with the waivers, but the last set of FAA revisions only consisted of 2 lines
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (9:25:43 PM): So I take that as a positive sign
Grant Atkinson, Texas A&M (9:25:56 PM): nice
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (9:26:07 PM): We have 4 teams currently registered to participate
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (9:26:14 PM): MIT, Caltech, Iowa, WPI
Justin Richardson, Iowa State (9:26:29 PM): it's Iowa State, We despise Iowa, get it right please
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (9:26:33 PM): UofA was going to compete, but dropped out due to lack of interested members / experiance
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (9:26:35 PM): My apologies
Justin Richardson, Iowa State (9:26:52 PM): its cool, its just something we get picky about here
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (9:27:04 PM): Give the very small turnout of interested chapters
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (9:27:14 PM): I would like to extend the deadline for groups to join the competition
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (9:27:28 PM): to the PDR deadline in May
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (9:27:33 PM): With the CoC's approval
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (9:27:48 PM): This would have two benefits
Grant Atkinson, Texas A&M (9:27:49 PM): sounds good
Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (9:27:55 PM): will this bump back the other deadlines?
Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (9:28:00 PM): like pdr
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (9:28:06 PM): No, all deadlines would remain the same
Justin Richardson, Iowa State (9:28:09 PM): I like the idea, but is that going to push the launch then
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (9:28:13 PM): but groups can join the competition up to the PDR deadline
Justin Richardson, Iowa State (9:28:43 PM): sound good to me
Basant V Sagar, MIT (9:28:50 PM): cool
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (9:28:53 PM): So they might only have a month to get their stuff done for PDR, but if they can do it, good for them
Grant Atkinson, Texas A&M (9:29:05 PM): any potential problems this could cause?
Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (9:29:11 PM): seems reasonable
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (9:29:25 PM): I dont forsee any for the competition or teams, except the teams joining late might be rushed to get stuff done
John Ferreira, Florida Institute of Technology (9:29:26 PM): As long as it doesn't push anything else back and things won't be too rushed, sounds good to me.
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (9:29:44 PM): but that is the consequence of joining late in the game
Grant Atkinson, Texas A&M (9:29:58 PM): right
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (9:30:03 PM): As for the site location
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (9:30:31 PM): The X PRIZE Cup is still uncertain if they will be hosting an event in October
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (9:30:50 PM): therefore I started researching alternative locations slightly before the last CoC meeting
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (9:31:50 PM): Given the Executive Board's requirement on the competition location (must be near an event that has a large SEDS presence so as not to conflict with travel to other events), and the FAA's requirements of no human habitation nearby,
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (9:32:02 PM): the best location I could find that hte FAA would approve was Spaceport America
Justin Richardson, Iowa State (9:32:22 PM): where is that again?
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (9:32:32 PM): about an hours drive from Las Cruces
Grant Atkinson, Texas A&M (9:32:32 PM): new mexico
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (9:32:40 PM): where the X PRIZE Cup is going to be, if it happens
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (9:32:52 PM): to be honost, it is hard getting approval for sites
Libby Herpich, Worester Polytechnic Institute (9:32:54 PM): is the x-prize cup going to be in las cruces?
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (9:32:59 PM): undecided
Libby Herpich, Worester Polytechnic Institute (9:33:09 PM): okay
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (9:33:11 PM): but likely in New Mexico or El Paso
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (9:33:25 PM): I proposed our event to the Director of the Spaceport
Libby Herpich, Worester Polytechnic Institute (9:33:25 PM): ah
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (9:33:32 PM): and he is currently reviewing it
Justin Richardson, Iowa State (9:33:39 PM): ok
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (9:33:56 PM): At this time, I'd like to open the floor to questions about the Rocket Competition
Justin Richardson, Iowa State (9:35:15 PM): Are we still looking at the same date for launch if X-prize doesn't happen then?
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (9:35:40 PM): I'll pose the question to the teams then
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (9:35:45 PM): if the X PRIZE Cup doesnt happen
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (9:35:51 PM): see if they would like it to be pushed back or not
Justin Richardson, Iowa State (9:36:13 PM): The team here at ISU would like to keep it the same
Basant V Sagar, MIT (9:36:36 PM): no pushing back
Libby Herpich, Worester Polytechnic Institute (9:36:54 PM): WPI will be fine with it either way
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (9:37:26 PM): One other note: Funding the prize itself has been difficult, given the low number of teams, but I have been invited to a meeting with Raytheon, IBM, TI, and a few other companies next month
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (9:37:43 PM): I'm hoping to have good news coming out of that meeting
Basant V Sagar, MIT (9:37:44 PM): cool
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (9:37:54 PM): especially seeing as they invited me
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (9:38:02 PM): Any further questions?
Libby Herpich, Worester Polytechnic Institute (9:38:48 PM): i'm sorry, but is our tentative date still fall 2008 or 2009?
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (9:39:12 PM): Fall 2008
Libby Herpich, Worester Polytechnic Institute (9:39:32 PM): okay, thanks
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (9:40:08 PM): I'd like to close the floor now and propose a vote on the matter of allowing groups to join the competition until the May PDR date.
Darrell Cain, Director of Chapter Affairs (9:40:12 PM): alright
Darrell Cain, Director of Chapter Affairs (9:40:22 PM): as a non-voting participant he can suggest the vote
Jonathan Gross, Penn State (9:40:22 PM): i second
Darrell Cain, Director of Chapter Affairs (9:40:26 PM): but someone needs to put it forward
Darrell Cain, Director of Chapter Affairs (9:40:28 PM): and second
Michael Green, SEDS-UCF (9:40:32 PM): i propose such vote
Darrell Cain, Director of Chapter Affairs (9:40:35 PM): lol
Jonathan Gross, Penn State (9:40:37 PM): i second
Darrell Cain, Director of Chapter Affairs (9:40:40 PM): alright

Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (9:45:10 PM): you can find a list on that page
Jake Welch, Cornell University (9:45:56 PM): jrwelch@email.arizona.edu
Libby Herpich, Worester Polytechnic Institute (9:46:19 PM): all of the speakers on that page are planning on being there, right?
Jake Welch, Cornell University (9:46:22 PM): talk with your chapters and let me know
Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (9:46:24 PM): yes
Jake Welch, Cornell University (9:46:43 PM): and last time we were able to get more than one person to speak with us
Grant Atkinson, Texas A&M (9:46:56 PM): looks like a great list
Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (9:47:01 PM): indeed
Jake Welch, Cornell University (9:47:02 PM): we had rusty schweikhart give us a talk
Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (9:47:06 PM): any in particular
Jake Welch, Cornell University (9:47:16 PM): we had john carmack speak with just us
Jake Welch, Cornell University (9:47:31 PM): and a nice little conference on new ways to use the internet to help space
Jake Welch, Cornell University (9:47:52 PM): so make up a small listo f about three or four people you want us to shoot for and we'll do what we can
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (9:48:09 PM): Obviously cant please everyone but we'll see what we can get
Grant Atkinson, Texas A&M (9:48:32 PM): of the list, elon musk, ansari, and pete worden jump out at me
Grant Atkinson, Texas A&M (9:48:39 PM): but whoever you could get would be great
Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (9:48:53 PM): well, I'll let you guys think on those and repond by email
Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (9:49:06 PM): anyway, next isdc item:
Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (9:49:08 PM): also, they are looking for volunteers, so you need to let me know if you have a group from your chapter interested asap. we'll be sending out more information on this soon to people who have expresed interest
Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (9:49:27 PM): they need a lot of volunteers
Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (9:49:55 PM): so are getting kinda antsy that we haven't been able to confirm many people with them
Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (9:50:04 PM): (understandably)
Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (9:50:30 PM): and the last note was
Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (9:50:32 PM): also, we're considering having a live coc at isdc if there's enough interest. thoughts on that?
Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (9:50:48 PM): or interest in this?
Basant V Sagar, MIT (9:50:49 PM): cool
Grant Atkinson, Texas A&M (9:50:54 PM): if there are enough members there that'd be great
Grant Atkinson, Texas A&M (9:51:07 PM): by when do you want to know about people going?
Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (9:51:14 PM): ie if we had this, who would be interested in attending?
Michael Green, SEDS-UCF (9:51:23 PM): i would
Grant Atkinson, Texas A&M (9:51:29 PM): i'm interested but i'm not sure if i'll be there
Libby Herpich, Worester Polytechnic Institute (9:51:30 PM): i would
Justin Richardson, Iowa State (9:51:34 PM): I know for a fact I can't make it to ISDC, but I'll check with other members
John Ferreira, Florida Institute of Technology (9:51:43 PM): I'd be intersted, if the logistics worked out.
Antonio Villarreal, University of Arizona (9:51:49 PM): I think UA members would be interested. Just have to confirm.
Basant V Sagar, MIT (9:51:54 PM): i'll be there
Coralie Jackman, UIUC (9:51:57 PM): UIUC won't be attending
Matt, Caltech (9:52:30 PM) has left the room.
Darrell Cain, Director of Chapter Affairs (9:52:41 PM): the chapter rep does not have to directly attend, a member from the chapter can stand in
Matt, Caltech (9:53:05 PM) has been invited.
Grant Atkinson, Texas A&M (9:53:11 PM): ok
Grant Atkinson, Texas A&M (9:53:20 PM): definately someone from A&M will be there
Grant Atkinson, Texas A&M (9:53:23 PM): i think it's a good idea
Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (9:53:26 PM): ok, I'll follow up with those of you who've expressed interest
Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (9:53:45 PM): but, if you can email me first, that would be greatly appreciated
Grant Atkinson, Texas A&M (9:54:24 PM): what's the e-mail again?
Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (9:54:52 PM): if you could get me appx numbers and if your chapter may be attending in the next week
Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (9:55:15 PM): so I can get a rough estimate to the organizers, that would be great
Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (9:55:21 PM): mclinkor@mit.edu
Grant Atkinson, Texas A&M (9:55:24 PM): thanks
Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (9:55:46 PM): also, we'll make a decision on whether enough members will be present to hold a coc next meeting
Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (9:56:14 PM): or vice-chair@sed.org
Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (9:56:25 PM): (so it gets documented better)
Libby Herpich, Worester Polytechnic Institute (9:56:41 PM): is that supposed to be seds.org?
Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (9:56:49 PM): yeah, sry
Libby Herpich, Worester Polytechnic Institute (9:56:56 PM): okay thanks
Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (9:57:01 PM): so be sure to talk to your members and keep us posted
Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (9:57:15 PM): if there are no other questions for me, i am done
Darrell Cain, Director of Chapter Affairs (9:57:56 PM): alright
Michael Green, SEDS-UCF (9:58:02 PM): for people aren't volunteering, are SEDS members getting any registration discounts or anything (or for the speakers)?
Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (9:58:12 PM): yes, it's $20
Michael Green, SEDS-UCF (9:58:14 PM): the dinner/banquents that is
Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (9:58:26 PM): possibly, we can work on that
Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (9:58:42 PM): but last year, there were none for dinners/lunches
Jake Welch, Cornell University (9:58:54 PM): alos
Michael Green, SEDS-UCF (9:58:54 PM): the account at UCF contacted teh ISDC people about that, and they told us it was still $40
Michael Green, SEDS-UCF (9:59:04 PM): accountant*
Jake Welch, Cornell University (9:59:46 PM): we're trying to get housing for the event, so people who get to us early will probably get free housing
Jake Welch, Cornell University (9:59:50 PM): possibly
Jake Welch, Cornell University (9:59:51 PM): sry
Darrell Cain, Director of Chapter Affairs (10:00:05 PM): Ryan, do you have an answer about the forty dollar item?
Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (10:00:37 PM): I thought it was $20, but am double-checking
Michael Green, SEDS-UCF (10:00:58 PM): I only ask, as we've already had people register at the full amount
Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (10:01:16 PM): but there is a special seds discount of some amt
Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (10:01:27 PM): that I have confirmed qith george
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (10:01:41 PM): SEDS discount last year was just the normal NSS member discount
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (10:01:43 PM): if I remember
Michael Green, SEDS-UCF (10:02:14 PM): also, what was that about housing for the event?
Jake Welch, Cornell University (10:02:44 PM): we're trying to get housing iwth local volunteers
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (10:03:08 PM): On housing I have potential good news
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (10:03:16 PM): two UA SEDS members have family in the area
Michael Green, SEDS-UCF (10:03:21 PM): currently we have one room booked, but don't really want to pay another $636 for a 2nd room
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (10:03:33 PM): they might be willing to let people either camp out on their lawn or offer floor space
Joshua Nelson, SEDS USA Chairman (10:03:39 PM): they are checking with their families
Mariel John, George Washington (10:03:52 PM): GWU SEDS member may be able to offer help in that area also
Mariel John, George Washington (10:03:58 PM): Since we're all in (or around) DC
Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (10:05:09 PM): btw, I'm having trouble finding the confirmation for reg, so will contact you guys later by email to confirm the reg price
Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (10:05:23 PM): but just to confirm, volunteers hav reg fee waived
Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (10:05:54 PM): anything else for me re isdc?
Ryan McLinko, SEDS USA Vice Chair (10:06:06 PM): otherwise, i am done
Darrell Cain, Director of Chapter Affairs (10:06:19 PM): alright
