[17:30] Joshua Nelson: Allright. Getting started for tonight, I'd like to discuss the SEDS USA booth at ISDC. What we want to have out there, etc...

[17:30] Joshua Nelson: Ryan, as the conference coordinator, do you currently have any plans for the SEDS USA booth?

[17:30] Ryan McLinko: well, different from the normal

[17:31] Ryan McLinko: the main thing different that I was hoping to do was get some h/w from local chapters

[17:31] Ryan McLinko: since we for once have some large, local chapters

[17:31] Joshua Nelson: *nods*

[17:32] Joshua Nelson: Have you contacted any of the local chapters yet to see if they're interested in coming?

[17:32] Ryan McLinko: then the usual: videos/etc from farther chapters, handouts for sv, national projects, etc

[17:32] Joshua Nelson: with hardware that is

[17:32] Ryan McLinko: not yet

[17:33] Joshua Nelson: K, could you see about getting answers from them so we know what we'll have?

[17:33] Joshua Nelson: UofA SEDS will likely be bringing shot glasses again, and I'll have the poster display

[17:34] Joshua Nelson: can also run off a bunch of brochures and whatnot before coming up

[17:34] Ryan McLinko: yeah, I was originally going to wait until we could get some more details, but I guess I might as well do sooner rather than later

[17:34] Ryan McLinko: I can print off stuff up here too

[17:34] Joshua Nelson: k

[17:34] Ryan McLinko: what I usually do for free

[17:34] Ryan McLinko: and we always have extra printing money that we never use

[17:35] Ryan McLinko: oh, btw

[17:35] Ryan McLinko: we have some SEDS pens as well

[17:35] Ryan McLinko: courtesy of the conference

[17:35] Joshua Nelson: nice

[17:35] Ryan McLinko: so I may try to bring down some of those to go with the buttons

[17:35] Ryan McLinko: and of course the banner

[17:35] Joshua Nelson: UofA SEDS is considering some conference ads, but unfortunetly we've yet to get many sponsors for the conference

[17:35] Joshua Nelson: so conference money is a bit tight

[17:36] Ryan McLinko: conference ads?

[17:36] Matt Cannella: has joined the chat

[17:36] Ryan McLinko: in what form

[17:36] Matt Cannella: howdy

[17:36] Matt Cannella: sorry i'm late

[17:36] Joshua Nelson: like pens, etc...

[17:36] Joshua Nelson: we'll have handout flyers and sponsorship documents

[17:36] Ryan McLinko: yeah, that should be sufficent

[17:36] Ryan McLinko: I didn't even make any of those

[17:36] Joshua Nelson: but we were originally hoping on having some other handout goodies. unfortunetly looks like thats a no go.

[17:37] Ryan McLinko: outside of papers, goodies don't generally bring in much more

[17:37] Ryan McLinko: if people are interested, a paper is good enough

[17:37] Joshua Nelson: *nods*

[17:37] Ryan McLinko: o/w, they just liek a free pen

[17:37] Joshua Nelson: One thing that was mentioned to me is making the SEDS booth into more of a hangout area, like some bigger companies try to do with their booths

[17:37] Joshua Nelson: since alot of SEDS members tend to hang out near the booth anyway

[17:37] Ryan McLinko: that's a good idea

[17:38] Joshua Nelson: I'm not talking about anything complicated

[17:38] Joshua Nelson: just arranging to have some couches and tables in the area

[17:38] Joshua Nelson: if its possible

[17:38] Ryan McLinko: even the setup of the table can be changed

[17:38] Joshua Nelson: *nods*

[17:38] Joshua Nelson: we want to attract attention to SEDS, having a non traditional setup is one possible way

[17:38] Ryan McLinko: ie not even couches, but something as simple as giving some convexity to the table(s)

[17:38] Grant Atkinson: sounds like a good idea

[17:38] Joshua Nelson: What do you guys think?

[17:39] Grant Atkinson: i like the idea of making the SEDS area feel welcoming

[17:39] Matt Cannella: me too

[17:39] Grant Atkinson: what steps do we need to take to do this?

[17:40] Joshua Nelson: well if you guys like the idea

[17:40] Joshua Nelson: I'll mention it to MyLinh and see whats currently arrange setup wise

[17:40] Grant Atkinson: sounds good

[17:40] Joshua Nelson: Or Ryan can if he wishes

[17:41] Ryan McLinko: go ahead...cc me tho

[17:41] Joshua Nelson: k

[17:41] Joshua Nelson: Ok, on a related note

[17:41] Joshua Nelson: the ISDC Room/Ride share forums have been set up

[17:41] Ryan McLinko: well, the room part should be easy if we do this house

[17:41] Joshua Nelson: as well as a forum for the SEDS House and SEDS Hospitality suite

[17:41] Joshua Nelson: http://www.forums.seds.org/forumdisplay.php?f=67

[17:42] Joshua Nelson: the room/ride share forum is for everyone attending the conference to use, not just SEDS USA members

[17:42] Matt Cannella: nice

[17:42] Ryan McLinko: oh, right

[17:42] Matt Cannella: also, i've been in touch with the president of UCF SEDS, Mike Green

[17:42] Matt Cannella: and he sent out some emails to see interest of people staying in SEDSHouse or at least volunteering for helping us get to and from

[17:42] Matt Cannella: i think we can pull it together

[17:43] Joshua Nelson: good

[17:43] Matt Cannella: (sorry to butt in and change subject a little)

[17:43] Joshua Nelson: np

[17:43] Joshua Nelson: it was relevant

[17:44] Joshua Nelson: might want to throw a post up on the forums with the information and details

[17:44] Matt Cannella: ok, will do... i'll meet with Dan again this week and maybe have some finalized sign up stuff by next week? we also found a possible lead on how to make paying easy

[17:45] Joshua Nelson: that would be great Matt

[17:45] Joshua Nelson: we need to get this out to the chapters ASAP so they can take it into account with planning

[17:45] Matt Cannella: a friend of mine is starting a website called wepay.com , where essentially an account is set up and people can put into it online and then we could pay for the house from one joint SEDS account

[17:45] Matt Cannella: i'm waiting for him to get back to me on becoming a beta tester for it

[17:46] Joshua Nelson: Next up: Since Keri B has asked to put her update off to next week.... Keri H... How are we doing with High School affairs?

[17:46] Keri Bean: ack, no >

[17:47] Keri Hancock: who is going?

[17:47] Joshua Nelson: (sorry, Keri B did you want to go? If so, you can go after Keri H)

[17:47] Joshua Nelson: Keri H, go

[17:47] Keri Bean: my counterpart can go first

[17:47] Keri Hancock: Well, I'm having to poke all the high schools with very sharp sticks to get them to remember to keep going

[17:48] Basant Sagar: has left the chat

[17:48] Keri Hancock: there is interest but people get busy and forget about us or don't respond to my reminder emails

[17:48] Keri Hancock: so, this is where we are at right now:

[17:49] Keri Hancock: Helen Berstein High School in Hollywood California is the furthest on their way to becoming a chapter, they have held their first meeting, elected officers, and written a constitution

[17:49] Keri Hancock: They have started on the application but as far as I know haven't sent it in to Rick yet to make it official

[17:49] Matt Cannella: nice

[17:49] Keri Hancock: Next, there is a high school in Billings, Montana that I have almost given up on, as it's been over 2 months and I still can't get them to respond

[17:50] Keri Hancock: they seemed excited at first, but I can no longer get ahold of them

[17:50] Keri Hancock: as a last resort I'll be calling them sometime this week

[17:51] Joshua Nelson: K.

[17:51] Keri Hancock: Next, UB SEDS is trying to reach out to local high schools. Last I heard they were planning a movie night with invitations to interested high school kids to try to interest them and hopefully start some chapters. The movie night was planned for sometime this month, and I'll know more when Brad gets back to me

[17:51] Keri Bean: maybe get a list of the FIRST high schools and contact them?

[17:52] Matt Cannella: yea, brad is really gung ho on that

[17:52] Keri Hancock: which first high schools?

[17:52] Matt Cannella: the movie night is planned for a couple weeks

[17:52] Keri Hancock: wait, what did you mean Keri B?

[17:52] Keri Bean: FIRST being the robotics competition

[17:53] Keri Hancock: ah, ok, I heard about that at the conference, I'm actually supposed to be hearing from one of them

[17:53] Keri Hancock: I was supposed to hear from them by this week or I get to contact them

[17:53] Keri Hancock: but I'll try to get a list of the others, even though they aren't technically space groups, I do have that competition on the website I think

[17:54] Keri Hancock: UCB SEDS is going in to Fairview High School in Boulder Colorado

[17:54] Keri Hancock: that is scheduled for the middle of May

[17:54] Keri Hancock: I hope we might get something out of that

[17:55] Keri Hancock: & I'm trying to get a chapter into Rogers, Arkansas to Roger High School because the teacher asked me to and because they have a very very strong astronomy program there, I think they'd definitly be interested

[17:55] Joshua Nelson: Ok. Don't be afraid to call them up or email them to check up on how they're doing

[17:55] Keri Hancock: I should be hearing back from St. Lois chapter to see if they'll go into that school to give a short presentation and talk to them about forming a chapter

[17:55] Keri Hancock: ya, I just don't want to be pestering

[17:56] Joshua Nelson: Anything else on your end?

[17:56] Keri Hancock: I was nervous about scaring people off with spamming up their inboxes, but I think that I could stand to be more aggresive

[17:56] Keri Hancock: nope, that's about it....oh!

[17:56] Keri Hancock: and the periodic tables (over 2 thousand) should be donated fully printed and laminated soon

[17:56] Keri Hancock: hopefully by the middle of may

[17:57] Keri Hancock: some of the NEA chapters will be willing to help distribute those to Physics and other science classrooms

[17:57] Keri Hancock: that's all

[17:57] Keri Hancock:

[17:57] Joshua Nelson: K, any feedback or advice for Keri?

[17:58] Joshua Nelson: If not, moving on

[17:58] Joshua Nelson: Keri B has requested we arrange a seperate meeting to discuss IYA stuff for those interested

[17:58] Joshua Nelson: Keri?

[17:58] Keri Bean: ok, so I'd like to get a meeting later this week to plan stuff for IYA

[17:59] Keri Hancock: when would it be best for you to do this?

[17:59] Keri Bean: what time would work best?

[18:00] Keri Bean: Wednesday night at 9pm EST would work best for me

[18:00] Grant Atkinson: that'd be fine for me

[18:00] Keri Hancock: that works best for me

[18:00] Keri Bean: ok, I plan on discussing events for us to coordinate and about our podcast stuff

[18:01] Keri Bean: and real quickly, I also wanted to bring up the endowment video

[18:01] Keri Bean: did we still want to do that?

[18:01] Joshua Nelson: Ryan?

[18:01] Joshua Nelson: Ryan, get off of facebook and answer poor Keri

[18:01] Joshua Nelson:

[18:01] Keri Bean: lol

[18:02] Ryan McLinko: oh, right?

[18:02] Ryan McLinko: so the last I heard about that was we had a script comign together, right?

[18:03] Keri Bean: well, there was complaint of sticking to the script vs. improv

[18:03] Ryan McLinko: well, I guess more important than the script beign the flow of the video

[18:03] Keri Bean: and we decided as long as the speaker kept to the approximate time, they could be flexible

[18:03] Ryan McLinko: exactly

[18:03] Keri Bean: and I sent out a round of e-mails to the speakers

[18:04] Keri Bean: and the only video we got was from Josh and Kyle

[18:04] Keri Bean: and Doug keeps hounding me on it

[18:04] Keri Bean: but there's only so many e-mails I can send that people don't respond to

[18:04] Ryan McLinko: who did you end up asking

[18:04] Keri Bean: the people in the script, including Bob Richards, Pete Worden, et al

[18:05] Joshua Nelson: unfortunetly they're all MASSIVELY busy right now

[18:05] Joshua Nelson: with the setting up of Singularity U etc...

[18:05] Keri Bean: yeah, that's what I thought

[18:06] Keri Bean: so Doug suggested moving down the list

[18:07] Keri Bean: and contacting not as famous people haha

[18:07] Keri Bean: but it may also be that none of those guys know me

[18:07] Ryan McLinko: well, if we can get a first rev out with students

[18:07] Ryan McLinko: and some closer to us, less-busy people

[18:07] Ryan McLinko: then that gives them much more of a reason to contribue

[18:08] Keri Bean: well, Doug made a rough draft of sorts

[18:08] Joshua Nelson: *nods* I concur with trying the lesser busy/less famous people

[18:08] Keri Bean: putting pictures in and narrating over the video

[18:10] Joshua Nelson: Lets try to get moving on this, if not by ISDC, I'd like to have it by NewSpace

[18:10] Joshua Nelson: have it playing for the first time on our New Space table

[18:11] Ryan McLinko: well, isdc could be a good way to do this

[18:11] Ryan McLinko: esp getting vids among students

[18:11] Ryan McLinko: esp if we're hanging out together in seds house

[18:11] Keri Bean: yes, most of the people we need to get video from would be there

[18:11] Joshua Nelson: yeah if we could arrange to have the camera present

[18:11] Joshua Nelson: and find a corner

[18:11] Ryan McLinko: and we can do some solid video editing/etc together

[18:11] Keri Bean: I can't go, but I can certainly send along my camera if need be

[18:11] Joshua Nelson: is it high enough rez? the video Kyle and I sent in wasnt good enough according to Doug

[18:11] Matt Cannella: sounds good

[18:12] Keri Bean: mine should be

[18:12] Joshua Nelson: k

[18:12] Keri Bean: it was probably more of a compression issue than a camera issue

[18:12] Joshua Nelson: I like the idea

[18:12] Keri Bean: and I have adobe premiere to play with and make it look good

[18:12] Joshua Nelson: lets do it, if you can find people willing to set it up and do it at ISDC

[18:13] Joshua Nelson: Keri B and Ryan, can you two coordinate on making the arrangements necessary?

[18:13] Ryan McLinko: sure

[18:13] Keri Bean: sure

[18:13] Joshua Nelson: thanks

[18:14] Joshua Nelson: Ok, one last item. Keri B and Will P have mentioned that they'd like to see the SEDS USA twitter account more active. To accomodate that, I'd like to do a monday spotlight of some SEDS USA item

[18:14] Joshua Nelson: ex: today I pointed out the Daedalus project

[18:14] Joshua Nelson: next week, Space Vision, etc...

[18:14] Joshua Nelson: but I'll quickly run out of ideas

[18:14] Keri Bean: that sounds good

[18:14] Keri Bean: well, maybe mention field trips groups plan to take too?

[18:14] Joshua Nelson: so if you have things that should be exposed on Twitter, let me know

[18:15] Keri Bean: like our SEDS chapter is touring the space division of SwRI next Friday

[18:15] Joshua Nelson: well as those things come up let me know and I'll post em

[18:15] Joshua Nelson: any other items for tonight?

[18:15] Keri Bean: omg random insert: I just got the information to get the Kaguya HD DVD

[18:15] Joshua Nelson: cool beans

[18:16] Keri Bean: does anyone have a BluRay player? I get it on that too

[18:16] Ryan McLinko: I think my new laptop is

[18:17] Ryan McLinko: yep

[18:17] Joshua Nelson: if nothing else, meeting adjourned (you two can continue chatting about that if you wish)
