(20 40 17) Me: ok, let's get rolling
(20 40 54) Me: so, server reimbursement
(20 41 01) Me: did everyone read josh's email
(20 41 07) Rick Hanton (Iowa): yes
(20 41 11) Joshua Sosa: yep
(20 41 16) Matt Cannella: yup
(20 41 25) Basant Sagar: yup
(20 41 27) Grant Atkinson: yep
(20 41 39) Me: any discussion needed for this or do people generally agree we should reimburse
(20 41 44) Rick Hanton (Iowa): Who is Chris btw?
(20 41 50) Me: unless anyone wants to make any arguements pro/against, we can vote
(20 41 54) Me: chris is an alum
(20 42 03) Me: who's continued to help us out with server stuff
(20 42 07) Me: and admin'ing
(20 42 11) Rick Hanton (Iowa): cool
(20 42 21) Basant Sagar: agree
(20 42 25) Matt Cannella: very cool.... i think reimbursement makes the most sense
(20 42 35) Rick Hanton (Iowa): What is the cost? Do we know?
(20 42 48) Me: 1s
(20 43 06) Me: #12.99 for an ssl cert
(20 43 08) Me: and
(20 43 33) Joshua Sosa: I think reimbursement would be most sensible
(20 43 34) Me: $129 for 1 TB drive
(20 43 46) Rick Hanton (Iowa): cool
(20 43 46) Me: ie we can reimbuse no prob
(20 44 00) Me: ok, so yes/no/abstain
(20 44 04) Rick Hanton (Iowa): yes
(20 44 05) Joshua Sosa: yes
(20 44 08) Grant Atkinson: aye
(20 44 11) Keri Hancock entered the room.
(20 44 23) Me: (keri, we're voting on server reimbursement)
(20 44 36) Basant Sagar: yes
(20 45 08) Keri Hancock: aye
(20 45 23) Me: aye
(20 45 32) Me: 6-0-1
(20 45 34) Me: passes
(20 45 41) Me: ok, next up
(20 46 01) Me: facebook ad
(20 46 04) Me: rick, you're up
(20 46 16) Rick Hanton (Iowa): Ok
(20 46 28) Rick Hanton (Iowa): Hopefully you all saw the e-mails I sent over the weekend.
(20 46 41) Rick Hanton (Iowa): I think we have a pretty good setup now for the ad.
(20 46 51) Rick Hanton (Iowa): You can see what I am currently planning on here: http://www.stuorg.iastate.edu/isss/Facebook_SEDS_Ad.pdf
(20 47 21) Rick Hanton (Iowa): As you can see it is fairly simple in design.
(20 47 31) Rick Hanton (Iowa): And there are about 12 keywords I am using right now.
(20 47 43) Matt Cannella: I like it
(20 47 50) Keri Hancock: I liked the other picture but those words
(20 47 51) Rick Hanton (Iowa): That gives us an audience of about 375,000 people.
(20 48 11) Rick Hanton (Iowa): I heard a few people say that.
(20 48 19) Rick Hanton (Iowa): Do you want me to pick the other picture?
(20 48 23) Keri Hancock: I would
(20 48 28) Keri Hancock: It was more interesting to look at
(20 48 31) Rick Hanton (Iowa): I tried to touch it up as best as I could.
(20 48 39) Rick Hanton (Iowa): It was taken in a very dark room.
(20 48 40) Joshua Sosa: I thought with the other picture you cant really tell anything about the people
(20 48 52) Joshua Sosa: are they students, professionals, what
(20 48 59) Keri Hancock: but there's actual people, not just a bland logo
(20 49 08) Grant Atkinson: what was the other picture?
(20 49 15) Rick Hanton (Iowa): hold 1 sec
(20 50 34) Joshua Sosa: or choose a different picture
(20 50 37) Rick Hanton (Iowa): http://www.stuorg.iastate.edu/isss/SEDS_Ad.pdf http://www.stuorg.iastate.edu/isss/Facebook_SEDS_Ad.pdf)
(20 51 05) Rick Hanton (Iowa): that's SEDS_Ad
(20 51 11) Joshua Sosa: the one in the original is just too small
(20 51 17) Rick Hanton (Iowa): If anyone has a good picture in mind.
(20 51 27) Rick Hanton (Iowa): The issue is that it will be downsized in any case.
(20 51 36) Grant Atkinson: is there any way we could alternate the pictures?
(20 51 47) Grant Atkinson: i know i've seen some ads on facebook with the same text but different picutres
(20 52 13) Rick Hanton (Iowa): Yeah, I think what you could do is create multiple ads with different pictures.
(20 52 19) Matt Cannella: that would be sweet if it is possible
(20 52 21) Matt Cannella: oh
(20 52 21) Matt Cannella: then we could change between the logo and pics
(20 52 24) Rick Hanton (Iowa): You just cut the per-day budget in half.
(20 52 44) Rick Hanton (Iowa): Any options on a better picture?
(20 53 34) Keri Hancock: space picture from our gallery?
(20 53 57) Grant Atkinson: maybe one of people at the spacevision conference?
(20 54 03) Keri Hancock: you might have to contact Chris Lewicky to make sure we are allowed to use it (he posted over 90% of them)
(20 54 10) Matt Cannella: i liked the other because it had the SEDS logo
in it
(20 54 24) Joshua Sosa: I agree that having actual people is nice but it doesn't really draw me
(20 54 28) Rick Hanton (Iowa): Yeah, I haven't checked if I can use the one I had. (I'm sure it would be cool.)
(20 54 45) Keri Hancock: I liked the logo, and the crowd, even if you couldn't see all their faces
(20 54 51) Rick Hanton (Iowa): I could have a space picture of a nebula or something with the logo.
(20 54 54) Keri Hancock: it seemed like we weren't just a tiny club
(20 55 34) Rick Hanton (Iowa): One option is that we could also ad a larger version of the people picture on the SEDS website landing page that the ad links to.
(20 55 41) Rick Hanton (Iowa): add not ad
(20 55 51) Me: ok
(20 55 55) zekesilva@gmail.com entered the room.
(20 56 07) Joshua Sosa: that would work
(20 56 14) Rick Hanton (Iowa): Another question that I had no answer to
is what is our budget for this going to be?
(20 56 24) Me: what do you propose
(20 56 28) Matt Cannella: important question
(20 56 53) Matt Cannella: how much does it cost?
(20 57 13) Rick Hanton (Iowa): I would say $20 per day and kill the ad
after a couple 100 $$?
(20 57 21) Rick Hanton (Iowa): Here's how it works:
(20 57 39) Rick Hanton (Iowa): We say that we will pay up-to $0.XX per
click.
(20 58 02) Rick Hanton (Iowa): Then we also say that we will only pay
for $XX.XX per day in clicks.
(20 58 33) Rick Hanton (Iowa): And we can set a given run period of time
too.
(20 58 40) Rick Hanton (Iowa): As in Date X to Date Y.
(20 58 50) Rick Hanton (Iowa): Or just kill the ad whenever.
(20 59 10) Rick Hanton (Iowa): I haven't actually seen the monitoring
system, because I haven't made the ad yet.
(20 59 25) Grant Atkinson: how much money does SEDS-USA have for
projects like this?
(20 59 42) Me: our bank has like $6k
(20 59 54) Me: but I'd avoid sinking too much on something like this
(21 00 05) Rick Hanton (Iowa): agreed.
(21 00 13) Me: would a week be enough to test this out
(21 00 17) Me: and get useful reseults
(21 00 19) Grant Atkinson: sounds like we could do a trial run for
something like a hundred dollars
(21 00 24) Grant Atkinson: see what kind of reaction that generates
(21 00 27) Rick Hanton (Iowa): I'd agree with that.
(21 00 49) Me: so how about a budget of $100
(21 01 08) Rick Hanton (Iowa): And I'll set it to a $20/day max.
(21 01 43) Matt Cannella: sounds good
(21 02 08) Me: any other comments before we vote?
(21 02 11) Me: oh
(21 02 13) Me: FOM's
(21 02 17) Me: figure of merit
(21 02 22) Me: how do we want to measure success
(21 02 32) Basant Sagar: number of clicks
(21 03 02) Me: well, that doesn't show how we get new chapters
(21 03 09) Rick Hanton (Iowa): Number of interest e-mails to expansion?
(21 03 11) Me: just because people click on us
(21 03 18) Me: that sounds reasonable
(21 03 18) Keri Hancock: 1 new chapter is worth it
(21 03 36) Rick Hanton (Iowa): Or a general uptick in website traffic
meaning that people are interested enough to look around the site?
(21 03 48) Me: sure, we can easily monitor that
(21 03 52) Keri Hancock: I like rick's idea
(21 04 09) Basant Sagar: how readily accessible is chapter expansion kit?
(21 04 19) Basant Sagar: we can monitor requests for that
(21 04 22) Rick Hanton (Iowa): It's a pdf on the website.
(21 04 28) Keri Hancock: it's on the front page right now
(21 04 34) Rick Hanton (Iowa): We can make sure that the page we lead
them to links to that.
(21 04 39) Basant Sagar: yup
(21 04 42) Rick Hanton (Iowa): It is very well-made.
(21 05 07) Me: ok, so let's vote
(21 05 17) Me: aye/nay/abstain:
(21 05 22) Basant Sagar: aye
(21 05 25) Me: i
(21 05 25) Matt Cannella: aye
(21 05 25) zekesilva@gmail.com: Aye
(21 05 26) Grant Atkinson: aye
(21 05 27) Rick Hanton (Iowa): aye
(21 05 34) Keri Hancock: aye
(21 05 55) Joshua Sosa: aye
(21 06 02) Me: 8-0-0
(21 06 07) Me: ok passes
(21 06 11) Me: anything else
(21 06 17) Grant Atkinson: CoC meeting this week
(21 06 22) Me: grant, floor is yours
(21 06 22) Rick Hanton (Iowa): Are we going live with that immediately?
(21 06 24) Grant Atkinson: we'll need an exec board rep
(21 06 33) Keri Hancock: I already volunteered
(21 06 39) Grant Atkinson: nvm
(21 06 44) Grant Atkinson: but are there any issues i should bring up
(21 06 47) Grant Atkinson: ?
(21 06 58) Grant Atkinson: right now i don't have any
(21 07 05) Grant Atkinson: and we need to maintain the chapter reps'
interest
(21 07 22) Rick Hanton (Iowa): You could mention that we have a new
souped up server.
(21 07 33) Rick Hanton (Iowa): And remind them that they can host their
chapter site there.
(21 07 46) Rick Hanton (Iowa): As a wordpress blog or whatever they want.
(21 07 53) Keri Hancock: and I mentioned to you already that I wanted to
talk to them about projects and high school involvement
(21 08 02) Grant Atkinson: alright
(21 08 12) Grant Atkinson: i'll mention those two items in my reminder email
(21 08 35) Grant Atkinson: that's all i wanted to mention wrt CoC
(21 08 37) Me: ok
(21 08 47) Me: anything else anyone wanted to bring up?
(21 08 53) Matt Cannella: NOVA
(21 08 57) Me: ok, go ahead
(21 08 59) Matt Cannella: josh sent me the letter from chair tonight
(21 09 07) Matt Cannella: should be out tomorrow... what is the email
address i send it to?
(21 09 10) Matt Cannella: to let everyone get it?
(21 09 58) Me: seds-announce
(21 10 05) Matt Cannella: @seds.org?
(21 10 06) Me: and josh or I will approve it
(21 10 07) Me: yes
(21 10 10) Matt Cannella: kk
(21 10 11) Rick Hanton (Iowa): should send it to the chapter one too
(21 10 17) Matt Cannella: sounds good. expect it tomorrow
(21 10 19) Rick Hanton (Iowa): So that all the chapters get a copy.
(21 10 27) Matt Cannella: i had one other thing real quick
(21 10 51) Matt Cannella: I know its a ways away, but UBSEDS was
starting to brainstorm for ISDC and came up with what I think is a
pretty good idea.
(21 11 04) Matt Cannella: instead of the $400+ for staying in the actual
hotel of ISDC
(21 11 13) Matt Cannella: we were thinking of renting a house down in
orlando for the conference
(21 11 20) Matt Cannella: a SEDSHouse, so to speak
(21 11 32) Me: hmm, that's a really good idea
(21 11 49) Keri Hancock: cool, how many bedrooms though?
(21 12 04) Matt Cannella: we were looking at prices... and if we get
enough people, it could be like $75-$100 per person for the whole week
(21 12 18) Matt Cannella: most we saw were like 7-10 bedrooms... each
room had 2 beds
(21 12 24) Keri Hancock: ok, wow
(21 12 35) Grant Atkinson: nice
(21 12 41) Rick Hanton (Iowa): that's cool
(21 12 52) Matt Cannella: so, i know its a ways out, but it was just
something to consider... it could be a lot of fun and greatly reduce costs
(21 13 19) Grant Atkinson: sounds like a good idea
(21 13 22) Matt Cannella: here at UBSEDS we'll get some more details,
and i'll provide more info as it comes
(21 13 24) Me: can you start looking into that and getting us more details
(21 13 28) Me: ok cool
(21 13 28) Rick Hanton (Iowa): Maybe ask about interest at CoC?
(21 13 31) Matt Cannella: sure
(21 13 41) Matt Cannella: just let me know the general concensus
(21 14 07) Matt Cannella: thats all i had... thanks guys!
(21 14 47) Me: ok, any other items?
(21 14 54) Keri Hancock: yes!
(21 14 57) Keri Hancock: real quick
(21 15 04) Keri Hancock: & as a quick announcement there are two high school teachers that are advisors for their schools astronomy clubs
(21 15 24) Keri Hancock: and they sent me emails saying that they are highly interested in becoming SEDS chapters!
(21 15 42) Keri Hancock: I just wanted to share the good news because it cheered at least me up today.
(21 15 54) Keri Hancock: I'm done
(21 16 06) Matt Cannella: sweeeeeet! good work
(21 16 12) Grant Atkinson: awesome
(21 16 28) Rick Hanton (Iowa): Could you send that on to me Keri?
(21 16 34) zekesilva@gmail.com left the room.
(21 16 37) Rick Hanton (Iowa): I'll forward them the form to fill out.
(21 17 21) Keri Hancock: they should be contacting you shortly rick
(21 17 24) Keri Hancock: I already did
(21 17 35) Rick Hanton (Iowa): Cool.
(21 17 37) zekesilva@gmail.com entered the room.
(21 17 38) Rick Hanton (Iowa): Thx.
(21 17 49) Keri Hancock: they have to read over the chapter expansion forms first and talk it over with their club and school
(21 17 56) Keri Hancock: so it may be a bit, but should happen
(21 17 57) Me: cool
(21 17 58) Keri Hancock: :-D
(21 18 07) Rick Hanton (Iowa): Sweet. I'm sure I'll be hearing from them.
(21 18 22) Basant Sagar: cool
(21 18 27) Rick Hanton (Iowa): I've been trying to get the St. Louis
chapter to join in. I still haven't heard back.
(21 18 38) Keri Hancock: :-D :-D :-D
(21 18 51) Keri Hancock: if they do then there's a conference coming up in the NSTA
(21 19 00) Keri Hancock: (National Science Teachers Association)
(21 19 20) Me: ok
(21 19 22) Keri Hancock: it's there national conference in New Orleans and they might be able to attend
(21 19 30) Rick Hanton (Iowa): hmm
(21 19 32) Rick Hanton (Iowa): Cool
(21 19 34) Keri Hancock: so maybe that will encourage them
(21 19 39) Keri Hancock: Bill Nye is speaking
(21 19 50) Grant Atkinson: nice
(21 19 57) Rick Hanton (Iowa): If we give them some good stuff to work with, they'll talk to others.
(21 20 26) Me: ok, ready to move on?
(21 20 39) Keri Hancock: sorry :-[
(21 20 45) Rick Hanton (Iowa): Were we finished?
(21 20 50) Me: np
(21 20 59) Me: if you weren't, then continue
(21 21 05) Me: I couldn't tell
(21 21 08) Rick Hanton (Iowa): No, the main meeting. I was just talking.
(21 21 20) Me: any other items anyone has?
(21 21 24) Rick Hanton (Iowa): nope
(21 21 29) Keri Hancock: nope
(21 21 30) Matt Cannella: nope
(21 21 42) Basant Sagar: nope
(21 22 08) Me: ok, meeting adjourned
