(5:32:02 PM) Grant Atkinson: which will be good

(5:32:15 PM) Joshua Nelson: Ok lets get started

(5:32:35 PM) Joshua Nelson: First up, so with the daylight savings time change, I wanted to confirm, is this meeting time still good for you all?

(5:32:54 PM) Joshua Nelson: (especially the Arizona peeps for whom this is actually a time change)

(5:32:57 PM) Zeke: Yes much better

(5:33:03 PM) Rick Hanton: Yup.

(5:33:19 PM) Keri Hancock: I may be up to 15minutes late in the future

(5:33:19 PM) Grant Atkinson: no change, no problem for me

(5:33:29 PM) Joshua Nelson: noted

(5:33:30 PM) Keri Hancock: I have to see what my 4th quarter work schedule is

(5:34:02 PM) Joshua Nelson: Ok, with that out of the way...

(5:34:07 PM) Joshua Nelson: Server parts:

(5:34:27 PM) Joshua Nelson: So when we upgraded servers, we ended up with two leftover older 80 GB hard drives

(5:34:45 PM) Joshua Nelson: they cannot be rigged up to the existing server, or backup server

(5:34:56 PM) Joshua Nelson: given slot space and compatibilities..

(5:35:23 PM) Joshua Nelson: As of this moment they're sitting in my cabinet. But since they're national property, some people have made some proposals on what to do with them

(5:36:01 PM) Joshua Nelson: UofA SEDS has requested they be donated to the UofA SEDS chapter for use in their chapter computers

(5:36:27 PM) Joshua Nelson: There has also been a proposal to raffle them off, auction them off, or give them away as prizes

(5:36:41 PM) Keri Bean: can we use them to store the podcast footage on?

(5:36:55 PM) Joshua Nelson: Unfortunetly given their relatively small drive size, 80 gb, they arent really worth putting on Ebay

(5:37:50 PM) Joshua Nelson: that can also be a possible proposal

(5:37:54 PM) Joshua Nelson: Any other ideas?

(5:38:03 PM) Joshua Nelson: (then we'll do arguements for and against)

(5:38:46 PM) Rick Hanton: Hard Drive wind chimes? http://hackedgadgets.com/2006/04/25/top-5-uses-for-a-dead-hard-drive/6/

(5:38:52 PM) Keri Hancock: lol

(5:39:57 PM) Joshua Nelson: With no other serious proposals, arguements for or against the above proposals? a) UofA SEDS gets them, b) Bring them to a conference and 'raffle' them to the chapters present or as prizes c) podcasts

(5:40:24 PM) Ryan McLinko: are they useful for podcasts...ie that can't be done on the current server?

(5:40:37 PM) Rick Hanton: I agree with Ryan.

(5:40:40 PM) Keri Bean: I meant for storing the raw footage

(5:41:04 PM) Ryan McLinko: but we have what 2 TB on the server

(5:41:08 PM) Ryan McLinko: compared to like 160 GB

(5:41:28 PM) Grant Atkinson: what does UofA propose using the hard drives for?

(5:41:39 PM) Keri Hancock: I really don't think that UA SEDS needs them, speaking as someone from UA. The guy that works with our technology just took apart over a dozen hard drives for fun

(5:41:53 PM) Keri Hancock: Our computers work fine

(5:42:03 PM) Rick Hanton: Nice. I have 2 non-working ones.

(5:42:07 PM) Joshua Nelson left the room.

(5:43:05 PM) Grant Atkinson: sounds like raffling them off might be the best idea then?

(5:43:31 PM) Rick Hanton: Do we need to wait until SpaceVision?

(5:43:47 PM) Joshua Nelson entered the room.

(5:43:48 PM) Keri Hancock: I think we'd have better luck with a bigger audience like that

(5:43:54 PM) Ryan McLinko: agreed

(5:44:01 PM) Keri Hancock: unless you want to do it at a conference like ISDC

(5:44:02 PM) Rick Hanton: 80 GB is less and less space every day.

(5:44:04 PM) Joshua Nelson: (sorry bout that... campus internet decided I needed to refresh my connection)

(5:44:05 PM) Ryan McLinko: I mean, they aren't large...but large enough

(5:45:41 PM) Joshua Nelson: Lets be like CoC for a few minutes... Anyone want to make a motion?

(5:45:56 PM) Grant Atkinson: lol

(5:46:06 PM) Grant Atkinson: motion to raffle the hard drives off at ISDC

(5:46:16 PM) Rick Hanton: Seconded.

(5:46:31 PM) Joshua Nelson: All in favor? (Aye, Nay, Abstain)

(5:46:35 PM) Rick Hanton: Aye.

(5:46:36 PM) Zeke: conflict of interest. abstain

(5:46:54 PM) Keri Bean: nay

(5:47:05 PM) Ryan McLinko: (#define i aye)

i

(5:47:07 PM) Keri Hancock: aye

(5:47:07 PM) Ryan McLinko: (tax problems) abstain

(5:47:14 PM) Justun Graves: aye

(5:47:16 PM) Joshua Nelson: Abstain (slight annoyance at having to carry them to ISDC with me)

(5:47:22 PM) Grant Atkinson: aye

(5:48:09 PM) Ryan McLinko: nice kids...we actually had an interesting vote

(5:48:25 PM) Ryan McLinko: lolz

(5:48:28 PM) Joshua Nelson: Motion carries (5-1-3)

(5:48:29 PM) Joshua Nelson: more nays next time people

(5:48:34 PM) Joshua Nelson: lets make it look like there's dissent

(5:48:35 PM) Joshua Nelson: ;-)

(5:48:50 PM) Keri Bean: I'm trying :-(

(5:48:54 PM) Rick Hanton: :-)

(5:48:56 PM) Joshua Nelson: Basant, what were the tax issues you are worried about?

(5:50:17 PM) Ryan McLinko: haha... we already had one conflict of interest... so needed someone with tax probs to complete the picture

(5:50:20 PM) Ryan McLinko: :-)

(5:50:26 PM) Joshua Nelson: ah k

(5:50:52 PM) Joshua Nelson: K, so the two drives will go to ISDC and we'll raffle them off there

(5:50:58 PM) Joshua Nelson: Next up: The Planetary Society

(5:51:03 PM) Ryan McLinko: yay (5:51:07 PM) Joshua Nelson: brief update, they've FINALLY got back to me about the MOU

(5:51:17 PM) Joshua Nelson: they definetly are going to do one with us, just want to work on the wording etc...

(5:51:34 PM) Keri Hancock: MOU?

(5:51:42 PM) Joshua Nelson: Memorandum of Understanding

(5:51:57 PM) Keri Hancock: thanks :-[

(5:51:59 PM) Joshua Nelson: just a letter defining our relationship with them, what both organizations get out of the relationship, etc..

(5:52:02 PM) Keri Bean: and The Planetary Society is the awesomes

(5:52:42 PM) Joshua Nelson: Before I begin drafting/revising the TPS MOU, are there any specific things people think we can give them or ask of them for our members outside of the normal stuff with NSS and SFF?

(5:52:52 PM) Joshua Nelson: If you need any TLAs explained feel free to ask

(5:53:15 PM) Keri Bean: well, I've already got the semi-written understanding that they'll help host and edit the podcasts

(5:53:25 PM) Keri Bean: so it may be good to throw that in there

(5:53:25 PM) Rick Hanton: What would the proposed MOU include?

(5:53:31 PM) Ryan McLinko: we can collaborate with them on educational projects

(5:53:32 PM) Keri Bean: and mention that Emily Lakdawalla is the one I've been talking to about that

(5:53:41 PM) Joshua Nelson: Has everyone here seen our previous MOU's with NSS and SFF?

(5:53:49 PM) Keri Hancock: nope

(5:53:56 PM) Joshua Nelson: k, I'll email those out later tonight

(5:54:26 PM) Joshua Nelson: basically they say things like we give them conference table space for free, they do the same for us, discounted conference rate at their conferences for our members at their conferences and vice versa,

(5:54:33 PM) Joshua Nelson: SFF gives us free admissions to theirs

(5:54:37 PM) Ryan McLinko: so I know what our interaction has been with SFF and NSS in the past, but what about TPS

(5:54:39 PM) Joshua Nelson: things like that

(5:54:47 PM) Joshua Nelson: TPS we havent had much in the past

(5:54:51 PM) Joshua Nelson: outside of the podcasts

(5:55:07 PM) Joshua Nelson: we're charting new territory forming this relationship with them

(5:55:16 PM) Keri Hancock: do they do any conferences?

(5:55:37 PM) Joshua Nelson: I don't believe so. They did co-host ISDC once when it was in LA

(5:55:41 PM) Joshua Nelson: hmmmm,

(5:55:57 PM) Joshua Nelson: Since none of us are particularly updated on the subject matter, I'm giving you all homework

(5:55:57 PM) Keri Hancock: what are our benifits from working with them then?

(5:56:07 PM) Joshua Nelson: I'll send out a copy of the MOU with NSS and SFF

(5:56:08 PM) Joshua Nelson: read that over

(5:56:14 PM) Joshua Nelson: and research TPS

(5:56:23 PM) Joshua Nelson: and come to next weeks meeting with a few ideas of benefits for us and them

(5:56:26 PM) Joshua Nelson: sound good?

(5:56:29 PM) Keri Bean: well, maybe they can involve SEDS students in their projects

(5:56:34 PM) Keri Bean: like Phobos-LIFE

(5:56:44 PM) Keri Bean: I'm a bit on the inside of TPS :P

(5:57:03 PM) Joshua Nelson: Next item:

(5:57:09 PM) Joshua Nelson: 501c3

(5:57:14 PM) Joshua Nelson: I got a text from Ryan Goodnight

(5:57:22 PM) Joshua Nelson: that we've "been assigned our IRS agent"

(5:57:46 PM) Rick Hanton: ooh fun

(5:57:50 PM) Joshua Nelson: which is confusing to me since a quick google search tells me that this is only the first step in getting approved by the IRS

(5:58:14 PM) Ryan McLinko: that's what I was about to say...

(5:58:15 PM) Joshua Nelson: we apply, they assign us an agent, and then he processes our application and gives us a decision

(5:58:34 PM) Joshua Nelson: Anyone know differently?

(5:58:57 PM) Keri Hancock: how long have we been at it so far? and how long can we expect now (if there was any info you saw on that)?

(5:59:40 PM) Joshua Nelson: un momento (Ryan is on the phone with me)

(5:59:44 PM) Joshua Nelson: Keri, do your item

(6:00:09 PM) Keri Bean: woah, wait, you confused me haha

(6:00:38 PM) Keri Hancock: 1st I have been in contact with someone who wants to partner with SEDS in doing a summer program

(6:01:00 PM) Keri Hancock: she wants a letter of support to include in her proposal from us

(6:01:14 PM) Keri Hancock: but will be mainly working at the local SEDS level

(6:01:56 PM) Keri Hancock: the only thing that I would be doing with her at the national level would be to help her gather information from schools and students after the program is run to check efficiancy

(6:02:41 PM) Keri Hancock: I just want to bring it up that I wanted to help and get quick approval before the grant proposal is sent in to NASA

(6:03:51 PM) Grant Atkinson left the room.

(6:04:14 PM) Keri Hancock: anyone have a problem with giving SEDS endorsment? want more info? can I move on to the next item?

(6:04:25 PM) Rick Hanton: nope

(6:04:56 PM) Joshua Nelson: (sorry bout that)

(6:05:09 PM) Joshua Nelson: ummm

(6:05:19 PM) Joshua Nelson: what level of partnership will this entail?

(6:05:24 PM) Keri Bean: what kind of summer program is it?

(6:05:27 PM) Joshua Nelson: and do we have a detailed description of the program?

(6:05:57 PM) Joshua Nelson: what would the commitment from local chapters be, which chapters, etc?

(6:05:58 PM) Keri Hancock: I have an email that I could send out that is a rough draft of her proposal (which should give more info)

(6:06:11 PM) Keri Hancock: she wants 3 things from SEDS

(6:06:23 PM) Joshua Nelson: yeah because we shouldnt give approval for our 'endorsement' without knowing EXACTLY what that will entail

(6:07:05 PM) Keri Hancock: 1. UA SEDS volunteers to help transport (either driving HOV vehicles or just going along for supervision)

(6:07:11 PM) Grant Atkinson entered the room.

(6:07:27 PM) Keri Hancock: 2. UA SEDS volunteers to help at maybe one lab and a tour of the imaging center

(6:08:00 PM) Keri Hancock: 3. National (pretty much me) to help create surveys for educators, parents, and students to check efficiancy

(6:08:29 PM) Keri Hancock: the benifits are that we get our name out there for no money, and possibly can get another high school chapter

(6:08:57 PM) Joshua Nelson: What exactly is the program?

(6:10:47 PM) Keri Hancock: she wants to work with high school native american students (bringing them in through a few existing programs) to do some work with geospatial technologies

(6:11:05 PM) Keri Hancock: she wants to have a field trip to the UA SEDS imagery lab

(6:11:21 PM) Joshua Nelson: U mean LPL imagery lab?

(6:11:24 PM) Keri Hancock: and tie the project in with some of the technologies used in the space industry

(6:11:33 PM) Keri Hancock: yes, think so, the one Pye Pye works at

(6:11:42 PM) Joshua Nelson: yeah thats LPL not UofA SEDS ;-)

(6:11:50 PM) Joshua Nelson: k

(6:11:58 PM) Keri Hancock: lol, I'm new at this, give me a break!

(6:12:22 PM) Keri Hancock: I just forwarded you her email to me that includes the attatchment of the proposal

(6:12:30 PM) Joshua Nelson: Have you discussed this with the UofA SEDS president and chapter, to see if there are students willing to put in the time/work?

(6:12:31 PM) Keri Hancock: (rough of the proposal)

(6:12:35 PM) Keri Hancock: yep

(6:12:43 PM) Keri Hancock: Kyle was at our meeting today

(6:13:00 PM) Keri Hancock: I made sure she involved him since she is looking for more local support than national

(6:13:19 PM) Keri Hancock: I'll be helping on the local level quite a bit because I'm passionate about it

(6:13:26 PM) Joshua Nelson: K, opinions on this?

(6:15:40 PM) Joshua Nelson: All in favor of issuing a formal letter of support to this program hosted by the Lunar and Planetary Lab Imagery Lab? (Aye/Nay/Abstain)

(6:17:07 PM) Ryan McLinko: i

(6:17:08 PM) Ryan McLinko: (import ryan.vote.aye) i

(6:17:11 PM) Grant Atkinson: aye

(6:17:13 PM) Keri Bean: aye

(6:17:13 PM) Rick Hanton: aye

(6:17:15 PM) Justun Graves: aye

(6:17:17 PM) Zeke: aye

(6:17:17 PM) Joshua Nelson: aye

(6:17:19 PM) Keri Hancock: aye

(6:17:45 PM) Joshua Nelson: motion carries

(6:17:49 PM) Keri Hancock: the second item I wanted to bring up was getting lab equipment donated to high schools. One of the women I work with is getting her doctorate in biology at the UA and has told me that a lot of research labs throw glass beakers and other basic equipment away after one use because certain experiments need to be completly sterile. She has told me that a lot of university and private programs look to donate them but don't have the time to find schools

(6:17:53 PM) Joshua Nelson: 9-0-0

(6:18:07 PM) Keri Hancock: (haha, I'm over anxious as usual)

(6:18:17 PM) Keri Bean: oh, you wanted dissent

(6:18:24 PM) Keri Bean: NAY! OMG! HAX!

(6:18:31 PM) Joshua Nelson: Shhh

(6:18:37 PM) Ryan McLinko: lol

(6:19:03 PM) Keri Hancock: so, could the lab equipment thing be something we want to look into? (mentioned above)

(6:19:42 PM) Grant Atkinson: what would we do with it?

(6:19:49 PM) Grant Atkinson: try to connect it to schools that need it?

(6:19:53 PM) Keri Hancock: yep

(6:19:58 PM) Keri Hancock: straight to schools

(6:20:01 PM) Keri Hancock: if possible

(6:20:04 PM) Joshua Nelson: Would they expect a tax writeoff for the equipment?

(6:20:32 PM) Keri Bean: I'd like to bring up the fact that while it's a great idea, it doesn't relate to the SEDS goal of exploring and developing space really...

(6:20:40 PM) Keri Hancock: haven't investigated it, but we could probably not deal with that, since they're currently giving it away for free

(6:20:56 PM) Joshua Nelson: Keri B brings up a good point

(6:21:11 PM) Joshua Nelson: we're not a general science club

(6:21:13 PM) Keri Hancock: y not Keri? doesn't it connect students with the opportunities to further their science knowledge and opportunities?

(6:21:15 PM) Rick Hanton: agreed

(6:21:23 PM) Keri Hancock: how else are they going to get here?

(6:21:38 PM) Keri Bean: I'm not saying it's a bad idea, it's just not our focus

(6:22:25 PM) Keri Hancock: understood, I'm just of the opinon that helping a school is never exactly bad for our general name, especially when it is going to areas that we traditionally get our future members from

(6:22:39 PM) Joshua Nelson: Would college chapters also have the opportunity to get some of this equipment?

(6:22:43 PM) Keri Hancock: yes

(6:22:56 PM) Keri Hancock: I see no reason why not

(6:23:13 PM) Joshua Nelson: I personally dont have anything against us trying this on a trial basis. Though we need to work out a system for this

(6:23:27 PM) Rick Hanton: What do the college chapters need chemistry expendables for?

(6:23:39 PM) Keri Hancock: I think that both hs and colleges need to pay for shipping though

(6:23:44 PM) Joshua Nelson: such as the equipmetn is donated, then somehow determining which chapters / high schools it would be best served at

(6:23:57 PM) Keri Hancock: our local chapter just did a bunch of rocket fuel experiments

(6:24:00 PM) Keri Hancock: candy fuel

(6:24:09 PM) Joshua Nelson: yeah agreed, either the company or the school should pay the shipping

(6:24:23 PM) Keri Hancock: it's still a hugely reduced cost in general

(6:24:58 PM) Joshua Nelson: Ok, all in favor of trying the above donation scheme on a trial basis? (Aye/Nay/Abstain)

(6:25:06 PM) Keri Hancock: I think that chem stuff is vital to rocketry experiments which is some of our best flashy public events

(6:25:18 PM) Grant Atkinson: aye

(6:25:21 PM) Keri Bean: nay (not in our focus area)

(6:25:23 PM) Keri Hancock: aye

(6:25:24 PM) Justun Graves: abstain

(6:26:14 PM) Zeke: a

(6:26:16 PM) Zeke: aye

(6:26:19 PM) Ryan McLinko: abs

(6:26:19 PM) Rick Hanton: nay

(6:26:24 PM) Ryan McLinko: abstain

(6:26:55 PM) Joshua Nelson: aye

(6:26:57 PM) Joshua Nelson: motion carries

(6:27:36 PM) Joshua Nelson: 4-2-3

(6:27:49 PM) Joshua Nelson: Before we adjourn, an update from Ryan Goodnight

(6:28:36 PM) Joshua Nelson: So the IRS told us last month that we were assigned our Tax Agent and would hear by the end of February on if we were approved, or what else was needed, etc...

(6:29:06 PM) Joshua Nelson: Now the fact that they assigned us a tax agent means they decided there was other information they need outside of what is included in a normal application

(6:29:28 PM) Joshua Nelson: our lawyer says there's nothing we can do right now except wait for the tax agent to contact us

(6:29:43 PM) Joshua Nelson: There unfortunetly is nothing that can be done to hurry the process until they contact us.

(6:30:09 PM) Keri Bean: ugh, and with tax season around the corner

(6:30:11 PM) Keri Bean: that's gonna be awhile

(6:30:16 PM) Joshua Nelson: Whenever they decide to contact us, they'll tell us what pieces of information they want, and once we get that to them it will be an additional 20 days to get approval

(6:30:38 PM) Joshua Nelson: Unforunetly now it comes down entirely to the tax agent we've been assigned. Some are super fast, some are super slow

(6:30:53 PM) Joshua Nelson: Some simple applications can take 6 months with a slow agent

(6:31:00 PM) Joshua Nelson: some complicated ones can take a week with a good agent

(6:31:31 PM) Joshua Nelson: Ryan G promises as soon as we're contacted or our lawyer tells us anything new, he'll give us a buzz

(6:31:40 PM) Joshua Nelson: Any questions on that?

(6:31:48 PM) Rick Hanton: nope

(6:32:26 PM) Keri Bean: I suppose there's nothing we can do but sit and wait

(6:32:34 PM) Joshua Nelson: So our lawyer says.

(6:32:35 PM) Keri Bean: maybe start our own WETI chapter! haha

(6:33:00 PM) Joshua Nelson: Any further business?

(6:34:49 PM) Joshua Nelson: In which case, meeting adjourned.
