The Iowa State Space Society (official site), also known as ISSS, was founded by students at Iowa State in the late 1980s. It was originally formed as a chapter of the National Space Society (NSS). In the early '90s, ISSS organized Iowa's first space conference, the Mid-Continent Space Development Conference. The conference ran for three years, and had a number of notable speakers, such as former astronaut Charles Walker, current astronauts of the time, and at least one senator.

The group has also gone on a number of member trips to places like the Kennedy Space Center (twice), the Marshall Space Flight Center, the Air & Space Museum, and other locations. Most recently, we went on a trip to the International Space Development Conference in Dallas, TX during the Summer of 2007 and spent a lot of time working on the Iowa State Space Society's Level 3 Rocket.

ISSS has a history of outreach, speaking to and working with K-12 students, participating in political discussions, and holding public stargazing events. Please contact us if you would like us to come to your school and build rockets with students or speak to them.

In the future we hope to expand our group to be more accessible to Iowa State students and community members at large. We have two telescopes, 8 and 10 inch refractors, and hope to go larger. We recently purchased solar film so that we can take our telescopes out in the day to show people the sun. We're also planning to launch a liquid fueled rocket at some point in time (more study and parts needed), and just finished our Level 3 rocket, predicted to go extremely high. The group was previously working on a "rockoon" project (a rocket launched from a balloon) that may reach the edge of space (Project further developed by Allen Ball). The rockoon project has now become a departmental project that is being overseen by both the ISSS and the SSCL known as the ISU Rockoon Project.

We are now a chapter of SEDS, and think that will open doors and attract new members. We have meetings every week, at which there is usually a presentation by someone inside or outside the group, and a stargazing session following. Our membership is open specifically to students, faculty, and staff at Iowa State, but our general meetings are open to everyone. ISSS is funded through GSB (The Government of the Student Body). The executive members can all be reached at isssexec [at] iastate.edu. Our faculty advisor is Dana Haugli, Lecturer in the Aerospace Engineering department.
