ISSS fall 2006 events
From SEDSWiki
August
- 23rd, 60:00 PM: Exec meeting, 0020 Howe.
- 27th, 6:00 PM: L3 rocket meeting, basement of Howe Hall.
- Of 15 on the isssrocket mailing list, 5 were able to come to the meeting: Ben Brockert, Allen Ball, Paul Murphy, Tabrina Sienkiewicz, and Kristin Shipley. We discussed the rules as Steven (at UMR) had laid them out. As background, the general idea is to have a dart (a smaller diameter unpowered rocket) sitting atop a booster stage. When the engine burns out, the dart continues to coast upward, hopefully to 23,000 feet.
- Decisions:
- a 38mm diameter dart would be best
- we should include our tracking radio
- we should try to include other SEDS chapters
- buy and use a timer for booster stage recovery
- use Allen's flight computer for data and dart dual deployment
- The design of the dart and booster was discussed in general terms. We're likely to go with a conic nose cone on the dart, because it will be supersonic. The method of holding the dart on the booster is still being decided. The nose cone will likely be carbon fiber or fiberglass, possibly with a metal tip. All the rest of the construction will likely be fiberglass, because we can get it for free.
- To do:
- confirm that we're using a M1939 engine, it's overly regressive
- start designing in Solidworks and simulating in RockSim
- find out what rocket casing type we'll be using
- decide on prediction processing specifics
- build a launch rail/tube/guide
