Abstract
This is a conceptual idea for a lunar rover which changes location by jumping using a high tension spring system, projecting the rover to a set minimum height above the lunar surface, where a light detection and ranging system (LIDAR) is used in conjunction with an imager to create topographical maps. A spherical shape and low centre of mass allow it to return to an upright orientation in the event of an awkward landing, and steering is achieved using two control moment gyroscopes (CMGs), but only when the rover is at rest. To navigate, voltage feedback sensors on the solar panels which cover the rover's top hemisphere can determine the position of the sun. The limiting performance factor is the structural integrity, which limits the maximum launch and impact energy.
