International LEEM-UPM CanSat Competition
Host: Laboratory for Space and Microgravity Research Location: Madrid, Spain
URL: http://www.leem.es/cansat/ Timeline: Applications due by 29 February 2008. Launch is planned for 10 to 12 April 2008.
Contact: contact@leem.es
Description: A CanSat is a "scale satellite" integrated within a soft drink can, that is launched up to 500m onboard an amateur rocket. Inside this reduced volume, all subsystems must fit (power, telemetry & command, recovery, payload) and it must accomplish a full mission. This "scale" project undergoes all the same phases as a real satellite mission, including the launch campaign and data analysis; that's why it has a great educational value for all engineering or science enthusiastic students.

European Student Earth Orbiter (ESEO)
Host: Student Space Exploration and Technology Initiative (SSETI) Location: Europe
URL: http://www.sseti.net/the-eseo-mission/index.php Timeline: Launch is planned for the end of 2008.
Contact:
Description: SSETI ESEO is the second ESA student satellite, following 2005’s SSETI Express. ESEO is also a technical precursor to the SSETI ESMO micro-satellite and will test hardware in a hard-radiation environment for future SSETI exploration missions beyond Earth’s orbit.

European Student Moon Orbiter (ESMO)
Host: Student Space Exploration and Technology Initiative (SSETI) Location: Europe
URL: http://www.sseti.net/the-esmo-mission/index.php Timeline: Launch is planned for 2011.
Contact:
Description: A 10 kg miniaturised suite of scientific instruments on ESMO would perform measurements during the lunar transfer and lunar orbit phases over the period of a few months, according to highly focussed science objectives.

Archimedes Mars Balloon Probe
Host: Mars Society Deutschland Location: Germany
URL: http://archimedes.marssociety.de/ Timeline: Scheduled for launch in 2009.
Contact:
Description: Archimedes is a small interplanetary space probe currently slated for launch to planet Mars in 2009. The probe is designed as a helium balloon ten metres in diameter. The onboard suite of scientific instruments is primarily geared towards the analysis of the atmospheric conditions on Mars. The device follows a payload proposal by the German Mars Society for a ride on AMSAT’s P5-A Mars orbiter.
