Mission

Students: submit your original astronomy photo to the 2007 SEDS International Conference Astrophotography Competition.

Conventional and digital photos (web cams or digital cameras -- no CCDs) will be accepted, though conventional photos must be scanned and submitted in a digital format with the paper. Maximum file size is 2 MB. Selected entries will be invited to present a poster at the conference. Entries should be printed and mounted on lightweight white board.

Students should include a 1500 word (maximum) paper discussing the subject of the photo. As a minimum, the following details should be supplied in the paper:

  • Title, subject of photo
  • Name and school/university
  • Exposure data: aperture, shutter speed, film type and speed or ISO setting used
  • Equipment used
  • Image processing applied
  • Any other appropriate details related to camera and telescope equipment
  • Description of the target of the photo

Prizes

  • First prize: US$200
  • Second prize: US$100
  • Third prize: US$50

Judging

The photos and papers will be judged by a team consisting of professional engineers, scientists, and professors from the American Astronautical Society, SEDS-USA Board of Advisers, SEDSAT-2 Advisers, and ISU alumni.

Judging criteria for the competition:

  • 85% for best photo
  • 15% for technical understanding of the subject of the photo and technique used to acquire it.

Winners and alternates will be notified by 17 August.

Rules

  • Submissions are limited to single participants. Participants may communicate with each other for assistance, but all submissions must be original work.
  • Submissions must be in English.
  • All participants must verify that they are students.
  • Maximum document length: 1500 words. (There is no minimum length.) Document paper size must be A4, 8.5" x 11", or an equivalent size.
  • Entries must be submitted in electronic form by 23:59 GMT on Friday 10 August 2007.
  • Entrant must attend the SEDS International Conference at Vellore Institute of Technology to be considered for an award.

Note: The SEDSIC Committee may need to make small changes to the rules between now and the submission of the Letter of Intent. To be notified of changes, please join the SEDSIC email list; all changes will be announced via this email list.
