SEDS-Earth

SEDS-Earth was formed with the intention of being a chapter of all national chapters. However, SEDS-Earth now acts as an organisation where SEDS members from across the world, with or without a chapter talk to each other.

We’ve been working as Kosmandu Astronomical Society since 2003 until recently in early 2007 we started as the Nepal chapter of SEDS.

As a student group, with the goal of promoting astronomical studies in Nepal, we’ve been organizing workshops, talk programs on Astronomy and observations for students and the public. With these small works we think we can help the society go one step ahead in progress.

As of today there are no existing astronomy/ astrophysics or any related courses in local Universities in Nepal and no such research facilities established yet. So much so that even a small amateur telescope cannot be found in the market. The government has ever been non-supportive to scientific researches and endeavors as it focuses more on poverty alleviation and other political issues.

With support from few organizations, we advocate the government to start astronomy courses and research facilities. We also network with other science groups around the country and use the local media to raise the voice.

So far, we are not involved in big technical projects, yet we’ve been involved with Permission To Dream project through which we received a Meade ETX 90 mm telescope in 2005, which we are using to organize star watching activities for school students and community people.

SEDS-India

SEDS-India has been in existence since December 2004. It had two chapters - SEDS-Mumbai and SEDS-MNNIT. Ever since, we have had three chapters - SEDS-VIT, SEDS-JNTU, Hyderabad and SPACE. SPACE is more of an association than an actual chapter. Our plans for the future include having a school outreach programme, already started by VIT and registering SEDS-India before the end of the year.
