The scope for similar data applications of current and future Indian sensors will also be discussed.
Info: Astronomical dust is the ugly duckling of the universe. Unglamorous at first glance, this principal solid-state component of the cosmos, reveals its beauty only in the infrared domain. I hope to show how interesting the study of star dust can be by reviewing its generic properties and specifically addressing its formation in novae. Three exciting results from our recent work on dust will be presented.

Info: Astronomy, and popular interest in it, flourished to a remarkable degree in Britain in the nineteenth century, women being among its votaries. In her talk Dr Mary Bruck, Emeritus Lecturer, University of Edinburgh will outline the little-known contribution of women to astronomy - from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries. Enterprising amateur astronomers had private observatories for serious research, assisted in many cases by female family members. Dr Bruck will explain how later on, ndependently-minded women with university degrees sought proper professional careers in science, with only limited success. The path to equality was to be a very slow one. Dr Bruck's lecture will describe the lives and contributions of some of these interesting women, including the famous comet discoverer Caroline Herschel (sister of William, discoverer of Uranus and the first President of the Royal Astronomical Society).
Info: Main goal of our conference is discussion of such aspects as up-to-date state of astronautics and its prospect, history of world astronautics from the point of view its lessons and experience, ability of using of space activity results in the interesting of science, economic and social development, influence of space activity on world outlook and quality of life, on building of new space thinking. Info: The Phoenix spacecraft's landing system hearkens back to the Mars landing system design used by the Viking landers of the 1970s - and closer still to its cousin, the lost Mars Polar Lander of late 1999. How does it work and why does it land so differently than the Mars rovers? Odder still, why does the landing system now planned for the big 2009 rover different from either the Phoenix lander or the rovers? What happened to the airbags? Have JPL's engineers gone off the deep end, or is there a method to their madness? Where is all this design diversity leading? Will humans land on Mars using these systems? JPL's Rob Manning will attempt to clear the Mars dust off this murky story.
