Yuri's Night Gallery
From SEDSWiki
Creating a gallery for your party is a great way to share your event with the rest of the planet! The Yuri's Night Gallery uses Sourceforge Gallery software to allow an easy-to-use, feature-rich gallery.
Putting your pictures in the gallery
Putting pictures in the gallery is easy. The basic process is simple, but there's a lot more you can do for those who are more adventurous.
- Create a login. Go to the YN Gallery and click on the Register link on the upper-right-hand corner of the page.
Fill in a username, your full name, an email address and password and confirmation. There's also a "Captcha" image that you have to copy a number from to ensure that you aren't an internet spam robot.
Note that you must use a valid email address to complete the registration process!
Click "Register" to submit the form. - You will receive an email from the gallery software that will look something like the following:
From: webmaster@yurisnight.net Subject: Yuri's Night Gallery Account activation Date: April 8, 2006 10:02:42 AM PDT Hello Test User, You receive this email because you have registered at http://yurisnight.net/gallery/main.php?g2_navId=x23d2c7f1 Your username is: test To finish the registration process please click the following link: http://yurisnight.net/gallery/main.php?g2_controller=register.ConfirmRegistration&g2_username=test&g2_key=G9373472&g2_navId=x23d2c7f1 If you did not register at this site then please ignore this email. The registration will not become valid and you will not receive any further emails. Sorry for the inconvenience. Thank you!
Click on the link to complete your registration.
- Now, Login to your account to get started. You'll be asked for your username, password, and enter the numbers from one of those Captcha images again.
- Browse to the 2006 Yuri's Night Gallery and then click "Add Album" in the upper-left-hand corner of the page to get your party started (right, or quickly)
- Pick a terse name for your album (used in the URL path), and then a more descriptive Title (location, date, or whatever you call your party. Feel free to fill in the rest of the details if you wish.
- The next page you'll be shown is a detailed "edit" page for your album. You can safely ignore all this if you wish. One suggestion would be to scroll to the bottom of the page and click "Enable rating for this album" and hit "Save" to allow people to vote on your party's images.
You can use the tabs at the top of the page to further refine your album. Under the "General" tab you can refine your album information, or perhaps select a "Permalink" for your album if you'd like to link from it from other external or static web pages. You also have the option to hide your album from browsing (available only by direct URL), or password protect it if there are items you don't want to publicly share. Try to keep it as open as possible though, as this is what makes it fun. - The next step is to actually add pictures to your album. First, make sure you're in the correct album by verifying the path in the upper-left-hand corner of the screen. It should be something like: "Yuri's Night >> Yuri's Night 2006 >> (your album here)" If this is the case, click "Add Items" on the upper-left-hand corner of the screen to get started.
- There are several methods you can use to get pictures into the gallery album. We'll briefly describe the various options here:
- From Web Browser: This is the most basic option, and best for uploading one or two pictures at a time. Click the browse button to find the images on your computer. Add a descriptive caption (optional) and click "Add Items" to upload them
- From Local server: If you don't know what this is, you don't need it. If you do, contact Chris Lewicki to get it configured properly. Its good for uploading lots of images that are already on the server somewhere.
- From Web Page: If you've got pictures somewhere else, fill in the URL here and click "Find Files" to suck them into the gallery.
- Gallery Remote: This is my favorite way to get images into the server. Follow the download link to get the program. Once you've got it downloaded, run it and configure it as follows:
- Fix or suffer the consequences of the warnings that it presents you with. It's probably safe to just ignore them.
- Click on the "Add Gallery URL" button on the upper-right-hand corner of the application. Then click "New"
Add an alias (only used locally) for your gallery, then your username and password for the gallery. Choose "Standalone" from the menu (the default), and the gallery url should be: http://yurisnight.net/gallery/ Click OK, then OK again to get out of preference. - Select your gallery from the menu (probably the default, if this is your first one), and then click on "Log In"
- Browse to find the album that you created earlier, or you can also create new albums here.
- Click "Add Pictures" and then browse to the folders or pictures you'd like to add. Click "add" for everything you want to upload. You should see icons of everything that will be uploaded.
- When you're ready to go, click "Upload pictures" to start the upload process. Depending on your network connection, the number and size of the pictures, it might take a little while to complete.
- Browse to the album in the gallery in your web browser to verify that they've been uploaded. You're done!
- Upload Applet: Clicking this will prompt you to accept that the Java Applet is safe to run on your computer (click yes). Adding images here is similar to the Gallery Remote option above.
- Webcam/Liveimage: If you've got a webcam somewhere, enter the URL of it here.
- WindowsXP: Some poor bastard who uses Windows XP will have to fill this in.
That's pretty much it! Have fun uploading pictures. Try rating other parties pictures, and upload them as often as possible during your party. Be sure to follow up afterwards getting people from your party to upload what they've taken.
You might want to experiment with the RSS feeds, or perhaps run the Slideshow applet during your party to show parties around the world!
