[21:09] viridis321: alright, I didn't have too much planned as I have an exam tomorrow morning.  
Basically I just wanted to give one or two updates and see if there was anyone else that had an update

[21:09] viridis321: and then briefly go back over an ideas for national projects

[21:09] viridis321: especially the rocket project since that seems to be the popular one

[21:10] viridis321: First update is that Jessica Wayer would like anyone interested in the Apogee books deal to send her an email

[21:10] viridis321: include Apogee books in the title 

[21:10] MoocyMoo86: whats that?

[21:11] viridis321: basically any chapters interested in earning a comission can either sell apogee books for I believe it's a 30% comission or so

[21:11] MoocyMoo86: ok

[21:11] viridis321: or someone from your chapter can go into the local bookstores and see how many of their books the store is carrying

[21:14] jedi8798: Ok, basically on the XPrize stuff, we're waiting on them to formally publish their rules

[21:14] jedi8798: Will's really excited we want to participate

[21:15] jedi8798: One thing I wanted to add is a payload competition for the chapters that cant launch rockets

[21:15] jedi8798: since you have to launch a 75 lb dead payload now anyway

[21:15] jedi8798: if we standardize the sizes of the payloads, non-rocket chapters can build payloads

[21:15] jedi8798: and you would get a bonus in the points for the SEDS competition if you carried another SEDS chapter's payload

[21:15] jedi8798: what do you guys think of that?

[21:16] BZWingZero: Great idea

[21:16] viridis321: I agree

[21:16] ItssodanotpopBCS: now what would determine whether a chapter would or would not build a rocket

[21:16] ItssodanotpopBCS: resources?

[21:17] viridis321: yeah, money and time

[21:17] ItssodanotpopBCS: ok

[21:17] viridis321: would probably be the biggest factos

[21:17] viridis321: factors*

[21:17] jedi8798: and ability to get rocket motors, licensing, etc

[21:17] viridis321: will these payloads include any of the control/flight computers or will that be the responsibility of the rocket building chapters?

[21:17] viridis321: i.e. - parachute deployment

[21:18] jedi8798: as it looks right now, the XPrize handles all of the FAA stuff, but you guys have to handle launch ability (like having the license to launch a rocket of this motor size)

[21:18] jedi8798: which you can do by getting someone who can do that to be present and sign off I believe

[21:18] jedi8798: D, I think they would be seperate

[21:18] jedi8798: at least in the traditional sense they are

[21:18] AeroE901j: hey, this is allen from Iowa state,  that is correct, you can have someone sign 
off on it

[21:19] jedi8798: payload is completely independent from rocket guidance

[21:19] viridis321: good point

[21:19] MoocyMoo86: How do you get a rocket license

[21:19] AeroE901j: i probably missed it, but what kind of motors are you planning on using for this?

[21:19] jedi8798: Saturn 5s were in reality controlled by a flight collar 

[21:19] ItssodanotpopBCS: now would our goal be to have as many payload chapters as we would have rocket builders?

[21:19] jedi8798: Aero- we have to wait for competition rules to be published at teh end of this month

[21:19] BZWingZero: The motor type would be determined by what the requirements for weight and altitude as well as restrictions on fuels

[21:19] jedi8798: Its- The competition involves launching your rocket as many times as possible

[21:19] AeroE901j: ok, you have any idea if it would be solids or hybrids?

[21:20] jedi8798: I think they would probally leave that open to you to decide

[21:20] AeroE901j: because experimental motors dont even require a sign-off

[21:20] viridis321: but not all places allow them though do they?

[21:20] viridis321: I think we've had some problems down here with experimental motors

[21:20] AeroE901j: nope, but at X-prize they will

[21:21] viridis321: ok

[21:21] jedi8798: basically on the engine and rocket permissions you will have to work on teh approvals yourself

[21:21] jedi8798: locally

[21:21] AeroE901j: its a special FAA waiver for EX i believe

[21:21] AeroE901j: ok

[21:21] jedi8798: then the FAA stuff is cleared 

[21:21] jedi8798: yup (sorry lagging)

[21:22] AeroE901j: haha, so what kind of budget are we talking about for this rocket

[21:22] AeroE901j: for each group

[21:22] BZWingZero: depends on the target for altitude and weight

[21:22] AeroE901j: ok, i just know this stuff gets expensive real fast

[21:22] jedi8798: yup

[21:22] jedi8798: thats why we have to make the prize sizable

[21:23] jedi8798: you will have to fundraise your rocket funds yourself

[21:23] jedi8798: sponsors and what not

[21:23] jedi8798: National will handle matching rockets with payloads, logistics day of, prize money, etc

[21:23] jedi8798: helping you find lodging, 

[21:23] AeroE901j: ok, i dont think our chapter has the resouces and connections to do that now

[21:23] jedi8798: can always try

[21:24] jedi8798: and the XPrize will hopefully be doing htis yearly

[21:24] viridis321: start sending out letters requesting money 

[21:24] AeroE901j: true, i am sure some do, and it sounds like an interesting project, but it will be hard to complete in time and on budget

[21:24] jedi8798: and the XPrize will hopefully be doing htis yearly

[21:24] viridis321: I agree with the time problem...it is definitely an ambitious deadline

[21:24] jedi8798: yeah

[21:24] jedi8798: like most of these 'competitions'

[21:24] jedi8798: its basically a prize that has a predetermined winner, if any

[21:25] jedi8798: like the lunar lander challenge

[21:25] jedi8798: people have to have been working usually on this beforehand

[21:25] jedi8798: but I believe SEDS chapters could pull it off

[21:25] jedi8798: especially if you start fundraising NOW

[21:25] viridis321: most SEDS people I know are pretty motivated

[21:25] jedi8798: like, tommorow

[21:25] viridis321: lol

[21:26] jedi8798: make sure to drop teh XPrize name when you're fundraising

[21:26] viridis321: Fundraising will definitely be easier once we are non-profit

[21:26] jedi8798: alot more people have heard about the competition and cup than you think

[21:26] jedi8798: amen to that

[21:26] viridis321: a lot of companies have been willing to give us money but only if we were nonprofit

[21:26] jedi8798: yeah

[21:26] jedi8798: you might also be able to sweet talk your local Space Grant chapter into letting you get donations through their non-profit

[21:27] jedi8798: people donate it to the space grant so they can write it off, then space grant gives it all directly to you

[21:28] viridis321: yeah, our Space grant has been very helpful

[21:28] viridis321: alright, anything else to add to this, questions, etc?

[21:29] viridis321: Just as a quick chapter update...Illinois is starting a supersonic rocket project now as well

[21:29] jedi8798: I will be setting up a listserv this weekend

[21:30] viridis321: for?  the projects?

[21:30] jedi8798: rocket project specifically

[21:30] jedi8798: for questions, etc

[21:30] viridis321: ok cool

[21:31] jedi8798: Which chapters here are interested in building a rocket for the competition again?

[21:31] jedi8798: (just for my records)

[21:31] viridis321: I believe UCF is, although I'm not sure about it for this XPrize.  We'll have to talk to the group at our meeting tomorrow

[21:32] AeroE901j: real quick, what does this project consist of?

[21:32] jedi8798: The Rocket Project is the Rocket Competition prize

[21:32] jedi8798: we just use the names interchangebly

[21:32] AeroE901j: oh, i thought this was a different project, sorry

[21:33] jedi8798: so it is basically build a reusable rocket that can get to 20,000 feet with a 
75-100 lb payload

[21:34] AeroE901j: i dont think the Iowa State chapter can do it for this year

[21:34] jedi8798: and launch as many times as possible within a certain period of time

[21:34] AeroE901j: we need some more experiance and get some fundraising connections

[21:35] jedi8798: well if you need any help, ideas, let me know

[21:36] viridis321: best way to do it is come up with a nice letter and mail to anyone and everyone

[21:36] AeroE901j: ok, we have a smaller competition project that we designed for this year we will be working on, might give us some good experiance

[21:37] viridis321: even non-engineering/technical companies

[21:37] AeroE901j: yeah, we will need to do that for this project, so we will see how much help we can get

[21:38] AeroE901j: How many SEDS groups have built a large rocket in the past?

[21:38] jedi8798: current chapters, I think its mainly UCF and ERAU?

[21:38] viridis321: UCF has done one

[21:38] jedi8798: in the past I know UofA built a ton

[21:38] jedi8798: none of those members are still around

[21:38] viridis321: UI  is currently working on one now 

[21:39] AeroE901j: ah, well it takes quite a bit of work, if the group is large enough and well organized it can be done though

[21:39] viridis321: FIT is also doing a lot as well

[21:40] viridis321: UCF started out with about 20 people working on it, but in the end it withered down to 4 or 5 and that was all that was really needed

[21:40] AeroE901j: ok, that would be good to get a lot of groups involved

[21:40] MoocyMoo86: I know our Chapter at Penn State is considering it but we really dont have the resources either

[21:41] viridis321: we divided it into groups...we had different deparments (launch pad, payload, aero, business, and I htink one or two more)

[21:42] viridis321: if you divide into groups like that you can get people from different majors involved...AE, EE, ME, CE, and business even

[21:42] jedi8798: is it more fundraising resources, or machining resoures you guys lack?

[21:43] viridis321: if it's machining, you can always find a local machine shop as a "sponsor" to do the work for free or really cheap

[21:43] AeroE901j: fundraising resources, if we had $15,000 laying around, i think it would be great for us

[21:43] viridis321: we did that and it worked out quit well..they did all of our welding, and machining at no cost

[21:43] jedi8798: talk to the local aerospace firms

[21:43] jedi8798: etc

[21:43] jedi8798: alot of them have big student outreach programs

[21:44] jedi8798: and educational funds

[21:44] jedi8798: and ask advisors to help ya fundraise it

[21:44] jedi8798: 15,000 isnt that much in reality

[21:44] jedi8798: UW raised something like 50 thousand for their Zero G project

[21:46] AeroE901j: ok, we will try to make some good connections then over the next year for our smaller project, then see about doing something big next year

[21:46] AeroE901j: if we can get a large number of people involved in it

[21:48] viridis321: advertise the group around campus...I've found that there are a lot more people 
out there who are interesting in building rockets than you'd think

[21:49] viridis321: or advertise the projects that the chapter is working on

[21:49] viridis321: alright, is there anything else from anyone
