Email lists on the seds.org server are managed by Mailman software.

Email lists are best suited for:

  • Maintaining a history of conversations
  • Easy distribution of announcements to a large audience
  • Private discussions (e.g. members-only discussions)
  • Discussions that require prompt attention

List Management

For all of these questions, LISTNAME is a variable that represents the name of any email list hosted on the seds.org server. Several examples such as seds-announce are listed in the public and private lists shown below.

How do I create a list?
Send an email to webmaster@seds.org with the following information:

  • Name and email address of list administrator(s)
  • Desired LISTNAME (for example: seds-india@seds.org
  • Chapter/group that will be using list

How do I contact a list administrator?
Send an email to LISTNAME-owner@seds.org

What is the difference between a list moderator and a list administrator?
List administrators have control over all parameters of a mailing list. They can change any list configuration variable available through the administration web pages. The list moderators have more limited permissions; they are not able to change any list configuration variable, but they are allowed to tend to pending administration requests, including approving or rejecting held subscription requests, and disposing of held postings. There are separate passwords for moderators and administrators.

List administrators can log in to the adminstrator site at: http://www.seds.org/mailman/admin/LISTNAME
List moderators can log in to the moderator site at: http://www.seds.org/mailman/admindb/LISTNAME

How to I send a message to a list?
Send an email to LISTNAME@seds.org

How do I add members to a list?
Users can add themselves to public lists by going to the general list information page: http://www.seds.org/mailman/listinfo/LISTNAME
After logging into the list administrator site, go to "Membership Management" then "Mass Subscription." Enter the email addresses you wish to add, one per line. Here you have the option of automatically subscribing members or sending them an invitation. Use discretion when deciding which option to use. Note that sending an invitation sends an email with an ominous-looking subject line.

How do I remove users?
After logging into the list administrator site, go to "Membership Management" then "Mass Removal." Enter the email addresses you wish to remove, one per line.

How do I view previous posts?
http://seds.org/mailman/private/LISTNAME List archives are only available to list subscribers; you will need to log in to view previous posts.
