Old ISSS Schedules

Fall 2007

September 22nd

October 26-28th

  • Midwest Power V launch in Princeton, IL (registration for launching: $20 http://blillesand.com/Registration/Registration.asp). We have money from GSB to drive to this launch for anyone interested in seeing launches or launching their own high-powered rockets. (Hopefully we will have completed Level 1's by this time.) It seems that members will be leaving Ames either early Friday morning or after 2:00 Friday afternoon.
  • X-Prize Cup in Los Cruces, NM (Free entry, ISSS has $500+ to send members there) http://space.xprize.org/x-prize-cup/

November 4th (Lunch at Noon, Rocket Launch 1pm-4pm)

  • Rocket Launch in Ames for Aerospace Engineering 160 class. There will be pizza preceding the launch for Aerospace Engineering students and faculty. Anyone is welcome to launch their own rockets as long as they weigh less than 3 lbs. with the motor installed and use a G-class or smaller motor. To launch personal rockets, register here.

November 9-12th

  • SpaceVision 2007 Conference Hosted at MIT in Boston, MA. We have money to go to this conference for anyone interested.

December 4th

  • Dead week movie night. Stop by to see the Discovery Channel special, "Black Sky", about the SpaceShipOne team and their race for space. We will also have pizza and pop for members. This will be at 7:00 on Thursday, in 20 Howe Hall (bottom of stairs).

2006 Fall

August

  • 30th, 6:00 PM: First general meeting of the semester. VP Ben Brockert will present on the group.

September

  • 6th, 6:00 PM: General meeting.
  • 9th, 7:00 PM: AAAA Star Party, "Our Place in the Cosmos". McFarland Park Observatory.
  • 13th, 11:00am-4:00pm: ClubFest, in the Great Hall of the Memorial Union. Stop by and say hi.
  • 13th, 6:00 PM: General meeting.
  • 16th-17th: Rocket Launch Trip: Tripoli Quad Cities at Walcott, Iowa. Allen and Tabrina get Level 2 certifications.
  • 20th, 6:00 PM: General meeting.
  • 21st–24th: Iowa Star Party. ISSS will be launching rockets during the day on Friday and gazing at night.
  • 27th, 6:00 PM: General meeting.
  • 30th, 5:00 PM: Family Weekend BBQ, Brookside Park. Open to everyone, free food for dues-paying members, small cost if not.

October

  • 4th, 6:00 PM: General meeting.
  • 10th: Space Career Fair in Omaha, NE. ISSS and AIAA joint trip.
  • 11th, 6:00 PM: General meeting.
  • 14th, 7:00 PM: AAAA Star Party, "Tycho and Kepler". McFarland Park Observatory.
  • 18th, 6:00 PM: General meeting.
  • 21st-22nd: X-Prize Cup, Las Cruces NM. Hopefully go.
  • 25th, 6:00 PM: General meeting.
  • 27th-29th: Tripoli Quad Cities Midwest Power IV. Big rocket launch in Princeton, IL. Rocket competition launch.

November

  • 1st, 6:00 PM: General meeting.
  • 4th, 1:00 PM: AerE 160 Rocket Launch. Come see hundreds of homemade rockets fly at the cross country field west of Towers.
  • 5th: Rain date for AerE 160 launch.
  • 8th, 1:12-5:00 PM: Transit of Mercury across the sun. We'll have our 10" telescope with solar filter out somewhere viewing it.
  • 8th, 6:00 PM: General meeting.
  • 9th-12th: SpaceVision2006, Orlando FL.
  • 15th, 6:00 PM: General meeting.
  • 18th: Local high power launch, including the long-awaited flight of the liquid fueled rocket.
  • 29th, 6:00 PM: General meeting, including elections for all positions.

December

  • 6th: Dead week meeting, where a movie will be watched.

Spring 2006

January

  • 19th, 6:00 PM: First general meeting of the semester. The different chairs spoke about their current projects.
  • 21st, 7:00 PM: ISSS VP Ben Brockert spoke at the Ames Area Amateur Astronomers January general meeting, at the Story County Conservation Center. He spoke about the cometary probe Stardust, the New Horizons interplanetary probe, Trans-Neptunian Objects, and the past, present, and future of the Iowa State Space Society.
  • 24th, 8PM: Stargazing, with focus on Saturn near opposition.
  • 25th, 7-9PM: Winter Club Fest, in the Great Hall of the Memorial Union. Stop by and find out about ISSS.

February

  • 2nd, 6:00 PM: General meeting. Dr. Charles Kerton, Assistant Professor in the Physics and Astronomy department at Iowa State gave his presentation Iowa Skies from the Fick Observatory.
  • 16th, 6:30 PM: General meeting. Rocketry Chair Tabrina Sienkiewicz presented on rocket safety and NAR certification.
  • 28th, 6:00 PM: Attempt at viewing Mercury. Scrubbed due to cloud cover.

March

  • 2nd, 6:30 PM: General meeting. VP Ben Brockert presented on Tripoli high power amateur rocket certification, and Pres. Allen Ball discussed rocket design and performance.
  • 23rd, 7:00 PM: General meeting.
  • 25th, noonish: Rocket launch at the cross country field west of Towers on the Iowa State campus. Low and mid-power rockets will be launched. Everyone is welcome to come and watch or launch their own rockets.
  • 31st–April 2nd: Trip to the Tripoli Quad Cities high power amateur rocket launch. ISSS members will be trying for level 1 certification, as well as launching the club's level 1 solid rocket and gasoline/peroxide experimental rocket.

April

  • 1st–2nd: Relay for Life. ISSS members will have telescopes out and be entertaining participants in the all-night American Cancer Society event.
  • 6th, 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM at Meeker Elementary School, 300 20th Street in Ames: Meeker Elementary Science Night. Space Society members will be talking to elementary students and families about space and demonstrating alka-seltzer rockets in the gym.
  • 6th, 8:30 PM: General meeting.
  • 8th, 8 AM – Noon: Iowa State Flying Cyclones Fly-In, Ames Municipal Airport. We'll be showing off the telescopes and talking to aviation buffs at the yearly fly in.
  • 8th, 2 PM – 6 PM: Springfest. At the yearly festival of the Union Drive Association, ISSS will be doing something. Come see us.
  • 20th, 8:30 PM: General meeting. Professor at the University of North Dakota, author of The Case for Space, and ISSS alumnus Dr. Paul S. Hardersen will discuss his department, the astronomy capability that they are developing, and possible collaborative efforts with ISSS. More info at ISSS April 20 meeting.
  • 22nd, all day: VEISHEA, on central campus. ISSS will be on display to the public during the annual student-run celebration of Iowa State. Telescopes will be out to look at the sun, alka-seltzer rockets will be made and launched, and water rockets will be launched 0.03% of the distance to space.
  • 27th, 6:00 PM: Dead week meeting, usually a movie viewing.

May

  • Fri May 5 10PM: Jupiter viewing. Also the very last day of the semester.
