Dear friends of Yuri's Night:

I have volunteered to coordinate a set of resources or "Party Kit" for new (and prospective) Yuri's Night party planners. The kit will contain advice, materials, information: essentially anything useful for potential Yuri's Night participants.

I will require your help, especially if you have experience serving as a party coordinator. Please take a few moments to recall what you view as the most successful and unsuccessful aspects of previous YN parties, and forward your comments and suggestions to barbara.j.thompson@gmail.com, or post them on this page.

Contents

Organization

  • Encouragement: Anyone is welcome to host a Yuri's Night party. Parties can have 10 people or 1000 people; choose your own way to celebrate as appropriate, and tell us about it!
  • Form a party committee, so you can have different people in charge of drinks, food, publicity, setup, cleanup, music, decorations, etc.

Entertainment

Things you can do at a Yuri's Night party:

  • Music (see suggestions for a Songs of Space playlist)
  • Movies (The Right Stuff, Apollo 11)
  • Images, Posters and Photos
  • Presentation Materials
  • Space-themed games
  • Materials, images, movies and web links on the life of Yuri Gagarin, the history of space flight and current exciting spacey developments. Pointers on how to share this information with your guests in an exciting and fun manner.

Publicity/Advertising/Promotion

  • Downloads of sample flyers and promotional materials
  • Ways to advertise your event:
    • Craig's List
    • Local newspapers
    • Physics, astronomy, engineering departments at local universities
    • Amateur astronomy clubs
